I have no doubt that Chambers Bay will be a part of the USGA's rotation for the US Open.
It's already part if golf history which is usually a big part of the network broadcast like to play up. A history that I'm sure DJ would like to forget but history none the less.

IDK about that...the Pacific NW is not a traditional spot for the USGA. I do think they will return, but it might be in the 2030-35 range. Maybe once every 20 yrs or so.

I'm a " Phil Guy" and to say that I was shocked and then disappointed is an understatement. Yes I know it's not the end of the world, and if it was Pat Perez or Rory Sabbatini or even Jon Rahm who had done it, it would have been a lesser deal, but I'm one of those guys , clearly in the minority, who likes the fact that golf is different than the other major sports. I like all the hoity toity stuffiness of golf. I like the ettiquette that is supposed to be followed. I get goosebumps when I hear the first few piano notes of the Masters theme. I like when players call infractions on themselves and I even liked it when tv viewers could call in a perceived rules violation. Anyway I guess I associated Phil with everything I considered " right" in the golf world, and now that foundation has been rocked. I guess I keep thinking...Would Jack Nicklaus have done this? WWJackD.

Golf question.... Since next years US Open is at Pebble Beach, will they also play the normal Pebble celebrity Pro Am in February, so actually playing the same course twice in one year?

They always play that pro am, even when Pebble is the host of the US Open later on.

I'm not a fan. I think it's a ridiculous looking golf course. Very contrived.

Phil Mickelson issues apology after U.S. Open controversy: 'Not my finest moment'

The five-time major champion said he was "embarrassed and disappointed" by his actions.

“I know this should've come sooner, but it's taken me a few days to calm down. My anger and frustration got the best of me last weekend," Mickelson wrote in a text message to Golf.com. "It was clearly not my finest moment and I’m sorry.”

Now that's more like it, Phil. :thumb:

Interesting...Phil has done a pretty good PR job...lol

I'm a little strange in that there was a time in the prime for both that if you liked you Phil, you didn't like Tiger and vice versa...on the golf course...I liked them both. I remember following Phil for nearly all 18 at the Bellsouth the year he smoked the field and went over the Augusta and won over there back to back.

This was a Thursday round and let's just say that Phil knows when the cameras are around and when they're not...imo he's not this warm and fuzzy character he portrays on TV. This incident changes nothing for me...I still like Phil. I would've respected his actions at Shinnecock at little more if he just went all the way with it, but as it stands he was making a statement.

IMO, no, Jack would not have done it.

2010 US Open...they played the AT&T and USO...but they're not the same course...as Phil has said...when the USGA gets their hands on it...

The former Wynn Golf Course in Vegas.

That was contrived. Beautiful but you know it had no business being in the desert.

What is contrived...the damn greens fees. the public tracks that get the USO, then start gouging regular Joes once that have it on their resume...$275 (non-resident) to play Chambers Bay? IDT so...but I would gladly hand over $450 to play Pebble...once.

Chambers Bay was a farce. It's a ridiculous golf course regardless of the setup. They ruined a perfectly good rock quarry, imo. Shinnecock Hills is a top 5 layout. I'm sure they'll keep coming back to it.
Shinnecock Hills needs to rebuild the greens... The US Open was a farce this year.

I think part of the misnomer about defending par is 8,000 yd golf courses....for me...I loved Merion.

It played a shade under 7000 yds, but tough as nails...but because they don't have room for all of the hospitality, corporate blah, blah, blah...it might be awhile before they go back there.

I don't mind graduated heavy rough off the fairways...the worst the shot the more it's penalized...but I don't like heavy rough 5' off the green and the ONLY play is a lofted wedge, hope and a prayer. I think they should consult with past players like Jack on the setups and at least get some input from guys that played in majors.
I also love Merion.

Phil has been a great ambassador for golf and is always willing to sign autographs for the fans. Tiger was great back in the day but never was appreciative of his fans.

No they don't. They're fine. They just need to water them and not get crazy with pin positions. What was wrong with them every day but Saturday ?

Sunday was the only day the greens were playable... Shinnecock got a black eye.

I think Tiger did far more for the game of golf than Phil has, and I Phil would admit that, but no question Mickelson has been and is great for golf and sort of became the figurehead of American golf when Tiger fell.

Tiger was more of a villain type persona. Early on Jack carried a similar persona...Arnie was the fan favorite and many did not like seeing Jack knock him off his throne...I think when Arnie finally embraced Jack...his fans came around and Jack became this beloved figure.

I'd really like to see Phil get the USO before he's done.

The quote that says it all about Jack & Arnold.

True...til his death that was the case I think.

While he will forever have detractors, Tiger is working his way back to the respected phase I suppose...but I'm not sure who we (as fans) really love collectively...Phil comes the closest imo.

One of the things that I admire about Palmer is hearing the stories about how he always made sure that his autograph was legible since he felt that it was his obligation to give them his time & something that clearly showed it was from him. Apparently his father instilled that type of philosophy in him. To me that speaks volumes - so different than a lot of famous people now who always bitch about giving any time to their fans.

Fans are a necessary nuisance to most famous people.

I get it...most of these people are as normal as we are when it comes to having dinner, lunch, the basic stuff we do w/o interruption.

I remember when I was a kid maybe 10 or so, downtown Memphis with my mom and we saw Elvis Pressley no more than 20' from us sitting down in a restaurant...I yell out, mom look Elvis! I was heading over to him and she grabbed my arm...leave that man alone! Would you want to be bothered while eating? She nodded at him, he nodded back and smiled.

Met Jack Nicklaus at the opening of Bears Best Atlanta...he was working technically I guess...he played all 18 holes and was describing how to play each hole as part of the grand opening...very engaging with the gallery of about 200 or so people. Shook his hand, had a few words...not nearly as big as I thought he would be, but taller/bigger than Arnie.

I never got to meet Palmer, but I saw him, Jack, and Gary Player at the Masters.

Arnie was just special in that regard.
