I was just going to post it, my brother just told me about a half hour ago. As a dedicated Marquette fan I am happy. I like the hire. We have a good recruiting class , something like 8th in the nation that he has to try to keep together but I do think he's a big enough name to do that.

I've always respected coach K as much as any of them and remember watching Wojo play. He was a very good floor leader and I am certain he was a hard working coach too.

After the rumors about Shaka Smart Marquette had to come up with someone good. So far their track record has been good when hiring new coaches. Two thumbs up , Go Golden Eagles.

Now go out and get Diamond Stone and reteam him with Duane Wilson along with some other key players already there. Should be no stutter steps. I think he can continue to move the program forward.

Probably not. I can see Wojo getting some head coaching experience, then returning to Duke to take over the head gig when K hangs it up

Coach K retiring?

Coach K just announced within the last week or two that he plans on coaching another five years. The reports of his death or demise have been greatly exaggerated. Duke will be just fine. Mark Twain.

I wouldnt be surprised if there was some slippage. K has lost a lot of bench talent over the last 5 years or so. One of the big reasons legends go out on a whimper is loss of talented assistants. Nobody knows if K can replace him him with equal or better talent, but the risk for deterioration is rising . You had Collins go last year and now Wojo

Not for at least 5 more years he say's

Good for Wojo but it is a big loss imo. BUT perhaps now Duke will actually get a "center" to coach the big men

Yea, not at all worried about Duke basketball.

Amaker + Duke recruiting = deep tourney runs. And if the formula doesn't work there are a dozen other good coaches that would drop everything and head to Durham, NC.

I like the hiring in terms of I think he will be a very good coach. Duke fans had great thigns to say about him.

I am however not confident that we keep the current recruiting class most importantly Ahmed Hill. That kid is going to be a stud, just praying he's doing what he does as a Golden Eagle.

Went to another Marquette site and just read this
"When I'm losing, they call me nuts. When I'm winning, they call me eccentric." Al McGuire.

Now that's classic.

Amaker? His record is far from proven. Duke is a very big job. They should get top candidates, but Indiana was just as big of a job when Knight left and they are still looking for his replacement.

I think you missed my pt. I believe since 09 is has been Dawkins, Collins, and Wojo. It is a talent drain. That simply increases the odds that Duke could slip, it in no way means Duke will be FSU in hoops in 3 years. Any change is likely to increase the volatility of a program. If you dont agree with that take a look at what Pitino was doing with Tubby and Donvan on his staff at UK. Compare the Brey and Amaker Duke years.

When Bobby Knight was ousted in Indiana their program slipped and is still a work in progress under Crean. When John Wooden retired the UCLA program took a dive. When Coach K retires one would have to think the Duke program will falter a bit. But Duke was a good basketball program under several successful coaches before Coach K arrived. Not to the Coach K level, but who else has that stature in NCAA basketball now? Folks forget about Vic Bubas and Bill Foster. They forget about ACC POY Art Heyman, Jeff Mullins, Steve Vacendak, and Mike Gminski. They never remember Bob Verga, Tate Armstrong or Randy Denton or Jack Marin.

Final Four 1963 (won consolation game against Oregon St.)
Final Four 1964 (Lost National Championship to UCLA)
Final Four 1966 (won consolation game against Utah)
Final Four 1978 (Lost National Championship to Kentucky)

Those were prior to Coach K arriving.

I suspect Coach K will hang on as long as JB is coaching. Now way does he surrender the lead in D1 wins. Same thing happened with Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno. They had to push Bobby out and Paterno hung on long past his effective coaching time.
