If the NHL does return to Winnipeg, they should hang up the pic of the Queen in the MTS Centre - no?

Meh, just look at a $20 bill to see the Queen. Put her in storage as far as I'm concerned.

i'm seriously rooting for this i wouldn't miss the coyotes at all,
in fact id be pretty disappointed if they didn't name the team the jets.

so far it looks like its only gaining steam and with the financial debacle going on in phoenix the next two weeks could be very very telling as to whats going to happen

I never did understand why the Jets were called the Jets.
sure there's an airport..... but it ain't that special.

original owner Ben Hatsin was apparently a buddy of the owner of the NY Jets.
not sure if that had anything to do with it, though.

should be the Winnipeg Mosquitos, or maybe Garter Snakes, or Slurpees. :becky:

Well the Canadian Dollar and the Salary Cap are also "what's different?". But banking on the strength of the Candian Dollar long-term is somewhat risky. It could stay close to par, could go up, or could go down. Would a team in Winnipeg be profitable with a $.70 dollar? Maybe, I don't know. If the Canadian Dollar drops the cap will likely drop with it to some extent. Also those figures around 4:30 don't include playoffs or pre-season which are big money makers for the owners.

I think it could work but will there be a franchise available? It seems the NHL is determined to keep the Coyotes in Phoenix, which I don't necessarily agree or disagree with. I hate to see any city lose their team but its a bit different when you have city losing its team so it can go back to the same city where it originally came from. If its any other franchise, especially 1 in the east then maybe Winnipeg isn't the most obvious choice. But if the Coyotes go anywhere, I say it has to be Winnipeg. Put them in the Northwest and Colorado in the Pacific (which should really be re-named Southwest regarless of these changes).

I don't like the fact that he added $13m in revenue sharing. If you need to rely on taking handouts from other profitable teams to make it work financially, you are making the league weaker instead of stronger, and shouldn't be getting a team.
btw - without that $13m, they are still sitting at $90m (plus pre-season / playoffs of course), but I don't think CBC should have included it.

i agree with that ... it kinda clouds the numbers

however ... they are undoubtedly going to be in a position to get revenue sharing ... they will meet the criteria ... i thinks its bottom half of revenues and in a tv market less than 2.5 million (if they get revenue sharing they forgo half their playoff revenues > ie half goes to the league)

Its gotta be better than Phoenix... There arent many other markets that an NHL team would work in.

phoenix revenue from court documents from last year

The documents say that ticket revenue — which is 50 per cent of total revenues for a typical NHL team — was hovering between 40 per cent and 43 per cent over the last three years for the Coyotes, "which suggests that the tickets are currently underpriced or the number sold is inadequate. The average ticket price for the Phoenix Coyotes was $37.45, which is $12.21 below the NHL average."

The Coyotes generated $54 million in revenue and $76 million in expenses for the 2005-06 fiscal year, a loss of nearly $22 million. They generated $59 million in 06-07, but ran expenses of $89 million, a loss of $30 million.

In 07-08, the team generated $56.5 million, spent $85.3 million, losing of $21.7 million.

I think it was one of elliot freidmans "30 points" articles recently where he mentions the revenue this year is estimated to be between $35 to 40 mill

neither did I... probably because not too many teams receiving the funds from the league makes the playoffs.

i dont know if they legally can use the name jets ... not sure who owns the logo and name now ... one thing is certain the owners who want to have a team own "Manitoba Moose"

i keep reading they want to make this manitobas team ... the provinces team (kinda like the canucks have made themselves BC's team ... ie WE ARE ALL CANUCKS) ... so they might be the Manitoba "somethings" ... they could conceivably be the only cdn team with PPV offerings although i think the western cdn teams have shown this route isnt entirely economical ... i can also see a provincial lottery with partial revenue going to the team

back to the name ... I really like the history behind the name "Falcons" ... came across this last week

Iceland hockey federations tribute to the Winnipeg Falcons : they even have a maple leaf in their countrys logo lol
