Really starting to think Jimmy G stays and ends up replacing Lance around week 7 or 8......the Niners could win a weak NFC and are built to win now. Not struggle with Lance's on the job training. Let Lance start next season when Jimmy G walks in the offseason.

Vote and discuss.

His Oline is good. Scheme is good. But there will be a learning curve against good defenses.

I’m sure glad we have Bobby Wagner now just for the San Fran games alone

I lean no. I am skeptical Lance is the upgrade over Jimmy G some want him to be. The sample of guys who didn't play much in college and are good in the NFL is basically non-existent. Sometimes, you don't draft a star QB.

and it was at the FCS level on a team where he benefited from having superior talent than the opposing team every game

Which 49er OL not named Trent Williams is actually good in pass protection? If anything I feel the exact opposite about the 49er OL, and it's another reason to vote no in this poll.

Yeah, SF is basically betting against every historical indicator other than tools that Lance is a star. Then again, Josh Allen wasn't even good in college, so weirder things have happened.

I find NDSU fans pretty obnoxious, so I'm sort of rooting against him

But he's from MN, so I'm also rooting for him

sophies choice you know

I think barring injury. He starts all season.
They mortgaged their future picks for this guy. He will have a very long leash, before getting pulled. So, I think even if he is struggling, he will play the whole season.

Yep. Niners are pot committed to giving him a try. I voted no though because I anticipate him tucking the ball often like many young QBs with legs to make plays as they figure it out. That increases the likelihood of him catching an injury and not being able to start all 17. I don’t think he will get pulled for poor play though.

Lance has played like 14-15 games since HS.

Again.....

Do you know how hard it will be for Lance to be worse than Jimmy G?

Garrapolo only averaged about 240 yards a game with SF with a relatively high turnover rate. Lance is going to run for 40 yards a game. That means he only needs to pass for 200 yards a game to equal Jimmy's output. In todays era of short passing with the YAC killers he has on that team, that really is a cakewalk to accomplish.

People seem to forget that the 49ers didnt move up to take Lance. They moved up to replace Garrapolo. They weren't sure who they were going to select when they moved up. The 49ers know their offense. They know what it is capable of. And they know Jimmy isn't the answer. Lance would have to be turning the ball over 2-3 times a game for a good month before they pull him. He'll have a long leash. And he has a good coach in a good system. Chances of him riding the pine for anything other than injury are really, really slim.

I think the question is counter-intuitive. I don't think Lance is a good QB, (at the moment), Garoppolo is better, and the 49ers are a contender. My instinct tells me Lance will be pulled. However, my logic says if the team is in contention they'll stick with him, and if they're not there's no reason to pull him. Hmmm! I'll go with 'Maybe'. IE he stays in unless he's unbelievably bad, he gets physically hurt, or he mentally disintegrates...all of which could happen.

Yes unless he gets injured and misses time that way.

49ers are a contender in spite of Jimmy G, not because of him. They hardly let him throw in the playoffs and when they do it doesn't turn out well in big moments. He's nothing more than top quality game manager QB. Lance might not be as consistent of a passer but he adds an element to that offense with his arm and legs.

Reason the 49ers didn't trade Jimmy G was because no one really wanted him as their starter except for a division rival that wasn't wanting to give up anything for him.

Almost everyone has Garoppolo as a top 24 QB. I've seen the 49ers record without Garoppolo. If Lance had been ahead of Garoppolo in January Shanahan would have played him.

Garoppolo wasn't medically cleared until July. There's a very limited market for alternative starting QBs in July because it takes time for the new QB to get up to speed and because most teams have financially committed to someone else. If Garoppolo had been healthy in March the QB market could have had a different outcome.

Barring injury I predict he'll start all season.

There will be highs and lows but I don't see the lows getting to the point he gets pulled. The bread and butter of the offense is the running game and Lance's presence provides a much bigger benefit so I think he'll get a longer leash than you might expect.

As far as Jimmy goes he basically has one elite throw and that's short to intermediate in the middle of the field. Can't throw deep, can't really throw outside the numbers, and he's not particularly careful with the ball either. It's just that Shanahan has made the most of that one elite throw because he has two guys with Deebo and Kittle that are monsters after the catch and are extremely effective in that area of the field. It's not that Jimmy is bad he's just limited and it shows up in the playoffs where he's not been a good playoff QB.

With Lance Shanahan will be able to add pressure on defenses because now the QB is a viable threat running the ball and Lance has a much bigger range with his arm so he's able to punish defenses that commit too heavily to stopping the run.

It's a team with a potential top 5 defense and top 5 rushing attack so they really aren't going to ask or really need Lance to throw the ball a lot anyways.

I'd envision Lance's year looking something like a Russell Wilson rookie year where the team relies on the rushing attack and defense with the QB making some big plays but mainly just being a game manager his first season.
