I said "as much as". Nowhere have I said don't hand out any punishment for off the field activities. I simply asked if you evaluate them both the same way. No offense, but it really is almost purely homer pats fans whining over Rice originally getting only 2 games while Brady gets 4. It's really stupid to posit that this means the league thinks tampering with balls is worse to society than beating your wife. The league has to come down hard on cheating and other violation of it's own rules. It doesn't have to come down as hard on things not covered by their own rules.

Not at all. Rice originally getting only 2 games was wrong in so many ways it goes way beyond Patriots fans.

If this thread is about that then it's seems a little silly. Of course the Ray Rice 2 game suspension was stupid.
Even Goodell admits that.

Brady getting 4 is ridiculous enough as it is for his "crime."

Yeah the NFL is not supposed to replace the criminal justice system but the NFL has to have strong penalties too.

They need to get their penalties consistent though.

The NFL DOES need to get its penalties consistent. On this, I do agree.

Of course, the NFL was trying to remain "consistent" when it gave Rice a 2-game suspension for a DV incident and then there was an uproar. People can't have it both ways.

And those consistent penalties for lying about tampering with the game and obstruction should be fairly stiff. I've said all along that the evidence we have seen is kind of weak so that part of being upset I get. The actual punishment for Brady is more than fair if he is guilty of lying and failing to cooperate. The team penalties might be a bit much, but I'm not how much of it is considered continuation of conduct from all of their prior incidences.

That was a common sense bone headed decision on the part of the NFL.

However, 2 games was much more consistent with what players were getting in the past for DV incidents (many not getting anything) than what the Rice suspension turned into after the uproar.

The NFL was tone deaf to the issue at hand. And with how it dealt with the video and questioning of Rays fiancé at the time. That alone, should have thrown any precedent rulings on DV out the window.

The point I'm making is it's much easier to be consistent when it comes to violations against their own rules. When it comes to "real life" incidents and the public perception of those incidents, it makes it much tougher on the NFL to get it right. The crime itself was nothing new and nobody had cared in the past. The video of the crime threw the NFL into uncharted territory.

I actually think they've gotten too excessive.. (No surprise huh?) There are different types of tampering and some are more serious than others. If you need to treat them all the same, there's no where to go when something truly serious happens. If Brady gets suspended 2 games for wanting his football deflated a little softer than the official limit (and 2 for not being cooperative) and the Patriots get fined a million bucks for not knowing better or something what happens when some serious cheating occurs?

What was the fine for stadium noise? 100K? Whatever it was seemed excessive.

I blame the internet and cameras on phones.

But the league has 100% control over their rules and the enforcement of them. Domestic violence is a lot more obviously a lot more complicated. I'd rather have them wait for the courts and protective services draw their conclusions before the league buts in. And this could have an adverse affect in some cases.

1. If I'm a player going into the last year of a big deal I'm going to lawyer up and try to delay the case as long as possible so I don't get suspended and lose the big bucks.
2. In families where the player is the bread winner, the victim might be even less inclined to get the authorities involved because of the impact it will have on their income.
3. Anybody can make an accusation. That whole Marshawn Lynch thing that made the news was some blinded drunk lady who asked a guy that kind of looked like him if he was him and he said yes. He didn't even do anything. She was stumbling around drunk and left. Not that he was suspended or anything, but it made the press and people started grumbling about a suspension.

They need to look at the severity of the incidents and all the facts instead of coming up with some inflexible punishment for all cases.

I think the counseling with spouse is ridonkulous. Umm...they need different kinds of counseling. Just another example of how so many people have no clue about domestic violence.

I agree it's a crazy difficult issue to address.

2 things here...

First, what type of counseling Ray had is unknown. The tweet is speculating what might have been included.

Second, joint counseling could be an appropriate measure depending on the case. For ex, Ray married his 'victim'. that presents an interesting dynamic to the DV case on its own.

Each case has to be looked at individually, taking into account multiple facts, motives and circumstances. That's why it's such a difficult issue to prosecute and assess appropriately.

The NFL should NOT be in the job of serving as a justice system for things not related to that which they are charged with. At least not as a primary role. The NFL is the ONLY place cheating can be dealt with. The courts are where the rest of that belongs.

BS. Like it or not, these guys are representing the NFL. When they pull stupid shit off the field, it reflects poorly on their team and the league.

I don't know who your employer is, but I feel safe assuming that if a story/video of you knocking your baby momma out cold in a casino elevator became national news, you would no longer be employed.

Exactly. We sure wouldn't want to blame the guy for beating his wife. We need to blame those fucking technological advancements that allowed us to witness it.

So, this has what to do with being firm on cheating when that is what your primary role is how? :noidea:

There's a difference between punishing a player for a negative impact on the NFL's image (every bit their right) and punishing a player for the crime itself.

I think requiring NFL players to wear body cams 24/7 would solve this dilemma. It would actually solve both problems.

1. We could see if the bitch started it/bitch was asking for it
2. We could see just how bad a decision sleeping with the ho was. If it's some smoking hot super model type then a fine and a pat on the back I mean slap on the wrist would suffice. If it's some skanky gold digger/groupie type then suspend them for the whole season for such poor taste.
