The buzz surrounding Andre Johnson's absence from offseason workouts with the Houston Texans picked up Thursday, as word came that he isn't sure if he will be with the team for training camp or Week 1 of the regular season.
Clearly, Johnson would like to be traded away, and four teams reportedly have inquired about acquiring him. However, as ESPN NFL Insider Field Yates notes, the dead money on Johnson's contract makes it highly unlikely that the Texans would deal him.
That's not the only reason why the Texans won't be receptive to trading Johnson.
"Johnson, one of the best receivers in NFL history, will not be traded for several reasons," wrote John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.
"The Texans want him to finish his career in Houston. They know they are a better team with him. And they don't want to set a precedent for similar situations that might develop in the future."
McClain believes that Johnson likely will be back with the team prior to their Week 1 battle with the Washington Redskins.
"Johnson isn't going anywhere. It's just business," he added.
"And here's a prediction: When he finally reports, probably before the Washington opener, Johnson will work as hard as ever, keep his mouth shut as he always does, learn his new system, have another terrific season, and continue to augment his Hall of Fame résumé."
