It is going to be fun watching Boris strikeout with Gallo's free agency. As Story's agent and Freeman's agent made huge mistakes with them, Boris also did so by not signing an extension here a year ago.

From the schedule, it looks like we will be about 2 games under .500 at the break. Then we may pull to within a game of .500 by the end of the month. We shall see.

From Jeff Wilson:

The Rangers continue to hover just below .500 and on the fringe of the wild-card race, with several better teams ahead of them.

Their schedule turns friendlier the rest of the month, with only one of the remaining four first-half series against teams with a winning record. The second-half opens with a long road trip against four losing teams.

It’s entirely possible the Rangers can get above .500 and give the appearance that they are a postseason contender.

If all goes well, the Rangers will have to decide if they should try to add to the 2022 roster at the deadline.

After nearly half the season, the evidence suggests that a get-back-in-contention winning streak isn’t going to happen. It’s also worth remembering that the Rangers still see player development as vital for 2023 and beyond.

Even if they climb above .500, even with an additional wild-card spot, trading big pieces for a rental player doesn’t make a ton of sense.

That doesn’t mean the Rangers won’t attempt to make a trade.

The Rangers made one of the biggest deals at the 2015 trade deadline, acquiring veteran left-hander Cole Hamels. They were below .500 when he came from Philadelphia.

Hamels helped spark the Rangers to the American League West title, but the move was made with 2016 and 2017 in mind. The Rangers could try to find a starting pitcher or outfielder who is under contractual control for multiple seasons and would be a key piece when the window to contend opens wider.

Miami, Cincinnati and Oakland have pitching to trade. The Rangers have the prospects to make any deal they like.

More from Jeff Wilson:

Here’s what the Rangers have in store for them with the third overall pick July 17: a sure-fire major-leaguer.

Of the past 10 drafts, eight of the players picked at No. 3 are big-league regulars. That list includes Rangers right-hander Jon Gray, selected by Colorado in 2013.

The two who are not in the majors are from the past two drafts, right-handers Jackson Jobe and Max Meyer, and they are top 100 prospects.

The Rangers had five top-100 prospects in the most recent Baseball America update —Jack Leiter, Josh Jung, Evan Carter, Ezequiel Duran and Justin Foscue. Cole Winn and Josh Smith, for however long he maintains rookie status, likely are just on the outside.

It isn’t an exaggeration to say the Rangers could have seven, eight or nine top-100 prospects at some point this year after the draft.

At this point it looks as if the Rangers will select a high school player with their first-round pick for the first time since Winn in 2018 (No. 15 overall). The main industry publications have the Rangers taking Florida outfielder Elijah Green, whose slot value is $7,587,600.

The Rangers, who forfeited the second- and third-round picks as compensation for signing free agents Corey Seager and Marcus Semien, have a small bonus pool of $9,640,700. It’s conceivable they could aim for a college hitter who would sign for well under the slot and be more aggressive in drafting and signing the rest of their picks.

The deadline to sign draftees is Aug. 1, which is a pain in the neck considering the trade deadline falls the next day. The two deadlines were reversed last year, but still only a day apart.

Bottom line: The Rangers are going to get a very good player.

More from Jeff Wilson:

If the Rangers aren’t going to contend, they might consider trading away players who could bring back something rather than seeing them walk for nothing in free agency.

Four veterans playing on expiring contracts could help a contender — outfielder Kole Calhoun, right-hander Garrett Richards and left-handers Martin Perez and Matt Moore. The return for Calhoun, Richards and Moore could be a lesser prospect depending on how much salary the Rangers are willing to eat, but Perez could land a bigger fish.

Perez’s value might never be higher, but he is a candidate for a contract extension and has expressed a desire to stay with the Rangers. Joey Gallo was in a similar spot last season, except he had another year of arbitration remaining.

A team will have to wow the Rangers with an offer to get Perez.

Shipping away a player or two would free up a few 40-man spots for players added in a trade or for promoted minor-leaguers who aren’t on the 40-man roster.

And some more from Jeff Wilson:

The past three seasons have seen the Rangers begin making noteworthy promotions or role changes shortly after the trade deadline.

Those teams were looking toward the future and needed to give prospects in the minors a chance to be evaluated in the big leagues.

This Rangers team is constructed differently and performing better, but there could be wiggle room to add some prospects.

That is something the Rangers will discuss over these next 30 days.

Catcher Sam Huff could return after the All-Star break if Mitch Garver elects to have surgery near his right elbow. Duran could be back if he shows an ability to play the outfield capably. He was the starting center fielder Friday and Saturday for Triple A Round Rock.

The Rangers have one opening in the starting rotation, and it appears Spencer Howard will get the first crack at that after a surge at Round Rock. Winn, who had his best start of the season last week, could become a possibility if the continues trending upward, and the same goes for left-hander Cole Ragans if he keeping well following his promotion from Double A Frisco to Round Rock.

It appears as if Taylor Hearn’s days as a starting pitcher are over. Glenn Otto was better Friday in his second start off the COVID injured list, but his rotation spot is not locked up.

The Rangers also have a large group of minor-league players who will be eligible for the Rule 5 draft this offseason.

They won’t be able to protect all of them by adding them to the 40-man, so some of them could be traded away in the right deal and some could be promoted before the season ends to get them on the 40-man.

Safe to say, the Rangers are looking at a busy, important 30-day stretch that is under way.

Only reason I see to make a trade involving any young players, determine who's not in the future plans and lessen the 40 man crunch that's sure to come

If Perez continues to pitch well over his next 4 starts the Rangers should offer him an extension. If he declines, definitely trade him.
