Only reason I see to make a trade involving any young players, determine who's not in the future plans and lessen the 40 man crunch that's sure to come
until we actually see them perform at this level any assumption of their value is just wrong.

everyone seems to be loving Josh Smith right now but a few months ago i doubt anyone actually believed he had any future here

You're the one that's constantly talking about the 40 man crunch, and it's going to be real next year, and you can absolutely make assessments about players based on AAA performance, but that's where proper talent assessment comes into play

Also no one said they had to be traded for ML ready talent, trades that send minor leaguers that are more ML ready that will need to be on the 40 man are made to teams that might use them and they send back minor leaguers that are talented but further away from rule V status

oh i know that we're facing a 40-man crunch but we all can name at least 10-12 on the 40 that we can clear easily by them being FA or just DFAing

I also didn't say do it, just it would be the only reason to trade some of the young guys is to get younger guys

i know but i doubt we will compete next year so cut the ones we know are dead wood, raise as many as we can to the 40 and take a look at the MLB level.

Based on what's happening this year, i think we definitely are on the running next year, if a couple young pitchers and hitters take the next step, totally possible, Jung is healthy, maybe, and Seager and Semien play better, probable

well we need a catcher, 1Bman, 2 outfielders and probably 3 starters and at least 3 relievers. are we asking too much for next year

I think we are OK at catcher, the rest is needed.

We don't need a catcher, we have Heim, and we have OFers, someone will step up, might be Smith and Duran if Jung takes over 3B

1B/DH could actually be a FA or Huff, Crim, Harris, Garver

Pitchers is harder, but we could already have Perez, Gray and Dunning, not unreasonable to think Leiter, Winn, Otto, White, Alexy, Ragans, etc... take a step forward

Relief pitching is such a crapshoot, but a couple decently priced free agents could shore it up, if a couple guys step up

Only free agents I see; Perez, a couple relievers, maybe a 1B

I wonder if Huff can play 1B. Would be a great asset if he can.

I dont think it's unreasonable to see Heim at catcher, Huff at 1B/DH and Garver at DH/1B next year, with Huff starting at catcher a couple days a week, when Heim gets days off

You do realize Heim is pretty good back there right?
like several others have stated i assumed we would lose Heim and they also want Garver gone. if 1 or both sats Garver would probably be a full time DH and most seem to feel Huff would be at 1st. so we either need a catcher or a 1st baseman

  • Martin Perez makes some sense as a sell-high trade candidate for the Rangers, though both Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News and ESPN.com’s Buster Olney feel it might be more likely that Texas keeps the veteran lefty and even looks to extend him into at least the 2023 season. Perez is enjoying a career year, with a 2.34 ERA over an even 100 innings, and a generally positive set of advanced metrics indicating that his performance isn’t a fluke. Perez has helped keep the Rangers on the outskirts of the wild card race, so if Texas can string together some wins in July, the team might not be selling at the deadline whatsoever.

Well as of now we don't need a catcher, and I think Garver is a DH going forward that can catch in a pinch
