just wondering... does gambling help or hurt the NBA... generally gambling helps all sports, as it gains viewers... but the NBA is tricky because during the regular season, we dont know whether or not the best players are going to play... and they get scratched at the last second...

basketball has always been the most frustrating for gambling... so, i do wonder if it gains the Gambling boost...
Not only is gambling good for basketball, it’s the only reason a large part of the viewing public is watching at all.

it's exactly what happened. I may end this soon and put you out of your misery.....but will let you make a couple more foolish comments first for my own entertainment (if not others).

Same for all the other sports, especially football

Not really into gambling, but it seems that gambling is kind of mixed right now for the NBA. Could be wrong...but it doesn't seem like the NBA has quite embraced gambling the way that the NFL and NHL have. Might be because there are people who still think the NBA league office uses the refs to rig games.

Oh, 100%. I used to do fantasy football and a pick ‘em pool with a group of friends. Over time, participation in both winded down...and then they both stopped completely. Once I didn’t have a betting angle on the NFL, I found the games to be unwatchable. Just an endless slog of beer & pharmaceutical ads mixed with penalty flags everywhere.

I’m sure there is still another Tim Donaghy in the ranks of NBA Officals.

Side note: I never imagined that sports would become so intertwined with gambling the way it is now. Announcers give their Draftkings picks at the start of the games and then they make a note of when guys hit their over for yards or receptions or whatever. I’m guessing the nba is the same way.

Fantasy/DraftKings type activity is probably at least half of the driver of viewership and interest, and a big reason why the NFL dominates.

I'd be surprised if there were any more Donaghy's. He got punished pretty hard.

There's an old saying..."2 people can keep a secret if one of them is dead". If that kind of stuff had been going, especially if the league office was involved, it would require a lot of people to keep the secret. Sooner or later, some disgruntled person would say something for revenge and/or a payday.

I don't pay a lot of attention when pre-game shows get into the gambling aspect because I'm not into gambling...but I don't recall hearing NBA commentators talking much about their picks etc. At least not like the NFL where they have parts of pre-games shows talking about gambling and revealing their own picks from that perspective. I've heard them make predictions, but that just seems more like saying who they think will win without any gambling aspect to it.

The average person has no idea how much the legalization of gambling in most states has changed things. The individual performance bets and how they can be parlayed into big payouts is a big factor too. None of those bets are reliant on a game being close. Ratings are ratings, the reasons don’t matter.

For sure. With all the money involved and the technology so people can gamble with their phones, it was inevitable the walls would come down between gambling and sports.

And not so coincidentally all of the sudden the leagues are fine with it when it was all taboo before.

NBA isn’t competing with the nfl. That is a losing battle

Yeah, no one is winning that battle...hell cfp games were blown away by NFL regular season games. It's the NFL, then everyone else is fighting for distant 2nd.

I agree. But the nba had Christmas now the nfl came in and took it over

Once again the NBA is not competing with the NFL in ratings. What do you not comprehend?

All the NBA care about is they just had their most watched Christmas Day slate in 5 years.
