Who do you guys think is the best team of all time not to win a national championship?

For me off the top of my head I think of 3 teams
2002 Miami
2005 USC
2011 LSU-say what you want but they blew everyone out and only close games they played were against Bama.

I dont think 02 Miami was even the best team in CFB at the end of the year. 02 USC was. Id probably vote for 1994 Penn State team. That team was fucking stacked.

Thats one game that I would have LOVED to have seen. 94 Nebraska vs 94 PSU may have been one of the greatest games of all time. Those are 2 of the 5 best CFB teams in my lifetime.

Are you referring to just teams that lost the title game?

I think 2005 USC was the second best team ever assembled in the BCS era.

The 2005 Trojans would have smoked any of the other champions from 98-12.

I've only seen a couple games of that 94 PSU team, but i'm not sold. I don't know how much you want to consider injuries, but when the 2011 Wisconsin team was healthy, that's the best B1G team i've seen in my lifetime. If Toon, Konz, and Devin Smith don't get hurt, that team probably rolls to a title. We just didn't have the depth that all title teams need to have.

And if we are going the pre-BCS route, whatever team you don't have as the champion from 1997 is probably a top 20 team all-time. That Michigan team has a strong case for the best defense in NCAAF history, while Nebraska stomped almost everyone they played.

Well you already know how good i thought the 11 Wisconsin team was. That team was probably the best offensive team of the last 15 years in CFB when they were healthy. Not 100% sold on their D though but Id have a healthy 11 Badgers team in my top 15 for sure.

That team needed a miracle (and an illegal one at that) to top Notre Dame. Their defense was blitzed by Fresno State. And most of that "raw talent" that made them so "unbeatable" has flopped in the NFL.

CONTROVERSIAL OPINION ALERT: They weren't even the second best team that year. Ohio State was.

I think 2011 Alabama defense would have held that USC team to 14 points and we would hve scored more than that on offense

Im saying if they played 2011 Alabama 24 2005 USC 14

the 08 Trojans team, say what you will about Mark Sanchez, but he is forcing two QBs to win BCS titles to be on the bench. Just look at that LB core. They should had played for the title, and I have very little doubt they win it, too.

Homer pick, but worthy of an honorable mention:

1978 Oklahoma.

Was ranked #1 from October onward and lost a 17-14 heartbreaker in Lincoln to the #4 Huskers with 5 fumbles lost, many at key times. Heisman trophy winner Billy Sims unfortunately fumbled within the NU red zone with a few minutes left to seal it for the Huskers. Sooners got revenge in the Orange Bowl against the Huskers, but they finished third behind Alabama and Penn State, both of which had 1 loss like OU, but back then it was when you lost, and Alabama had lost much earlier in the season like September-ish or so. Penn State was undefeated going in, but obviously lost a heartbreaker themselves to Bama. I think they still finished second.

Good thread!

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts we'd all have a merry christmas. But since they aren't and that team did not have the depth to weather injuries they clearly could not be the best.

The 94 Penn State was 12-0, Wisconsin lost 2 conference and their bowl.

I know you like to go to the stats to show how great individual players were but individual players do not make a team. 94 Penn State one of the greatest teams ever were head and shoulders above 2011 Whisky.

But of course we've been through this ad nauseum.
