Correction... I said we SHOULD sign some one to play on the line and STILL draft a D-lineman with the first rounder. Now what I expect them to do is go sexy, draft a RB or a WR or a safety, then wonder why we still cant stop the run.

this is what you said:

"Hell even if we sign Hankins, we should STILL draft a D-lineman. Because Hankins is a piece, not a solution."

Seems Kiem sort of agrees with me

Johnathan Hankins: He visited Washington on March 19, at the same time as McPhee, and the Redskins have remained in contact. But there doesn't seem to be anything close to happening and the sense is that whatever price Hankins is asking is not in line with his production. He would be viewed as another piece to their defensive puzzle and not a final piece; in other words, their run defense issues wouldn't be solved with one signing.

Redskins on hold with Johnathan Hankins, but draft could yield better DL options

You are crazy if we sign Hankins. According to ehb5 Fitz should trump everyone and anyone. I think Earl Thomas is the main focal point in Seattle. You are valuing a NT higher then a Player who an play any position in the secondary a la Ramsey. I take Barkley over Fitz b/c like I said yesterday RB's have immediate impact. But Vea or Payne, no.

Plus you even had the stones to say if we sign Hankins who will get some good money we still draft a NT over Fitz. Wow.
I hate to agree with you, but yeah... If the Skins sign Hankins, and Fitz is there at 13, they HAVE to pick Fitz. He's a phenom. And yes, the front 7 has a huge effect on the effectiveness of the secondary, but it goes both ways. When the secondary gives the front 7 extra seconds to rush the QB, they make a decent front 7 look real good. And his versatility adds all kinds of flexibility.

Look at the reality of production for our defense. Our passing defense was ranked 9th. Our Run Defense was ranked 32nd.

As an offense our time of possession was in the bottom seven. Alot of THAT had to do with not only our offense being weak at the skill positions, but also more from the fact that teams could run on us at will. A Phenom safety means squat if teams simply dont need to throw the ball to beat you into submission. NOw it would be awesome from a jersey sales and fan excitement stand point.

Not that it will fix everything but the rushing defense was a lot worse after Allen was hurt in the 49ers game. If he can stay healthy this season it will be a huge plus. Sure - they still need other players to contribute & I would not just assume that they won't take a D lineman with the 1st pick.

IM not disagreeing about Allens contribution or impact. BUt I think we saw first hand what a deep talented D-line can do for a defense. Would I love to have a stud safety on the back end?? Sure. From a team standpoint, fix the lines, build from there.

That game vs the Raiders felt so good. Got a little taste of what defense looks like. Had not seen that since the days of Gregg, Marcus Washington, Springs, Sean, and the crew. It felt so good.

I would love to add Minkah and drop him in the slot on 3rd down.

I would love to field a defense with Hankins and Allen on the edge with Payne or Vea in the middle.

I wouldn't be opposed to having Zach and Roquan in the middle with Hankins, Allen, and Ioannidis up front.

All I know is I forgot how good it feels when you have a defense that is just flat out punking the other team! Just 3 and out after 3 and out. Need that in my life.

Cute comment about the jersey sales. As was said a few times before, Allen being healthy combined with Hankins would make a huge difference in run defense. My advanced math skills indicate that's a large portion of the front 4. Also, safeties are an important part of run defense. And he's not just a safety - he can play the slot and move around on passing situations. Remember, we traded away the player who graded out as our best CB last year, and he defended the slot, and we lost another starting CB - Breland to free agency, and that hurts that phenominally awesome and awesomely phenominal 9th ranked pass defense.

Besides that, if we draft Vea and sign Hankins, would they play together? I doubt it. If I'm right, and it's possible I'm wrong, we probably end up playing our 1st round pick maybe a 3rd of the plays - probably less. And it doesn't make a lot of sense to do that unless he's a clearly better player than anyone else available. And I doubt there's any football guy who thinks he is.

Or once again we can look at reality and say, we would have Allen, Payne/Vea, and Hankins as our starters. With a solid rotation of Ion, one of the Mac Boys, and Lanier as our rotation guys. So that when things like, Injury or simple game fatigue sets in, we DONT have a drastic drop off from the production of the line.

And remember, we gave up the stud young corner o get the QB that NEEDS the defense to be able to help with time of possession. Which again means... hey guys we need to be able to stop the run. And until and unless we can do this, stud corners and safeties dont matter.

Well said Shark. We can draft the best safety or CB in this yrs draft, there will be no change. Most of the time what is going in the backfield is directly related to what is occurring on the front line.

We are WEAK when it comes to executing our blocking assignments on the offense side especially at LG, Center, RT Tackle, TE and WR. I remember game 1 last yr vs Philly. Our RB gettiing tackled several yards behind line of scrimmage way to many times. People missing blocks just horrible stuff and this was before we had all the injuries and this has been occurring even before the 2017 season. Now I can see some people are more entice to draft a RB. That's fine but please remember the poor OL blocking we have. Simply put we are soft SOFTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! at the point of attack.

A team that can’t run the ball and can’t stop the opposition from running is a losing team.

NOw it would be awesome from a jersey sales and fan excitement stand point. LOL

How do you state stats from last year when there were so many injuries on defense? That just does not make any sense.

You are basing run defense just with dline. LB's and Safeties matter in run defense.

Run defense STARTS with the defensive line. When your line is suspect, your entire defense is suspect.

Odd how you want to state the injuries and such as a Reason things were bad, yet the poor defense was NOT an excuse over the past two years. Nice Spin.

LOL that safeties don't matter. Does anyone here remember one of the greatest plays in Skins history - with Kenny Houston stopping Walt Garrison right in front of the goal ine? Does anyone remember a guy named Ed Reed? Does anyone remember a guy who use to wear #21 for the Skins?

Again.. who said safety doesnt matter. My point is, Safety is the sexy pick when your run defense is and has been the worst run defense in the league for years now. Until such time as the Redskins really fix the run defense, all a pick of one of these safetys does is give us a gu who will sell Jerseys for dan, make a pro bowl or two, and we will still wonder why this is a 8-8 team with a defense that cant protect a lead or get the offense the ball back.

Doesn't seem very good. At all really.

I had my doubts when he was at OU. Really nice college player but he was good because he was physically better than the defense. He's still not fast but now he's not stronger than the defense. But from everything I heard he's a good teammate.
