now, now, no reason to get all riled up, I got nothing against St Tom, but his head to head vs Barry was not very good, ya know...5 out of 17 isn't that impressive.
I'm not. Just tradin' barbs. :suds::yahoo:

not sure how I screwed that up, but the man is in the top 5. I think clearly the greatest coach in OU history. Pretty much checks off all the boxes I mentioned. Elevated his program to new heights. He was an innovator that had lasting influence on the game.

you've said Wilkerson before, not the first time, but no biggie. and again, I never said Barry was a better coach than Bud, because that would simply not be the truth. Bud Wilkinson is one of the all time best college coaches, without a doubt.

An argument for Robert Neyland.

Neyland coined the seven maxims of football:
1. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win.
2. Play for and make the breaks and when one comes your way - SCORE.
3. If at first the game - or the breaks - go against you, don't let up... put on more steam.
4. Protect our kickers, our QB, our lead and our ball game.
5. Ball, oskie, cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle... for this is the WINNING EDGE.
6. Press the kicking game. Here is where the breaks are made.
7. Carry the fight to our opponent and keep it there for 60 minutes.
*Every other coach mentioned on this thread embraced/embraces these maxims.

Neyland graduated from West Point in 1916. He was a star football lineman, baseball pitcher, and national collegiate boxing champion. Her served in France during WWI. After the war, he served as aide to the superintendent of West Point (Douglas MacArthur). During this time (1919-1925), he was an assistant football coach of the Army Black Knights (38-12-5). In 1925, he was appointed Professor of Military Science at the University of Tennessee. He served as assistant football coach that year (5-2-1). He took over as HC in 1926. Twice, his coaching career was interrupted by call up to active duty - 1925 (Panama) and 1941-1945 (WWII). Otherwise, he lead the Volunteers football program through 1952.

As Head Coach, Neyland's record was 173-31-12, including 9 undefeated regular seasons, 8 conference championships, and 4 national championships. His Volunteer team of 1939 was the last to go un-scored upon for an entire regular season. Under his leadership, the Vols ran off 17 straight shutouts and 71 straight shutout quarters of play (1938-1939), records that stand to this day.

Additionally, Neyland served as Tennessee AD from 1936 - 1941 and from 1946 until his death in 1962.

First Four I thought of in five seconds

Eddie Robinson I know, most of you have no idea who he is
Tom Osborne homer pick, offensive innovator
Bear Bryant Alabama football and that hat
Bud Wilkinson 47 wins in a row.

Then I started thinking and I cannot pick the fifth. Can I call it a tie?
Joe Paterno I know what you all think, but he made Penn State and he is Penn State

Bobby Bowden he took a girls school and made them a major football power

Barry Switzer He is still Oklahoma to me

Ara Parseghian Notre Dame in the 1960s was because of Ara

Lou Holtz he can bullshit with the best of them

Darrell Royal when I think of Texas I think DKR

John McKay long before Pete Carroll there was John McKay cranking out Heisman winners and NCs

Woody Hayes if you think Ohio State you think Woody

Bo Schembechler if you think Michigan you think Bo

Ben Schwartzwalder Syracuse powerhouse teams.

Frank Beamer he made Virginia Tech

Bill Snyder he took the worst football school ever and made them pretty darn good. I doubt many coaches could have done this at Kansas State. Maybe none could have, but Bill Snyder did.

Don James made Washington

Jimmy Johnson sort of slimy but he did bring swagger to Miami

Hayden Fry made Iowa

Barry Alvarez made Wisconsin

Vince Dooley Georgia

Steve Spurrier Florida and South Carolina

Urban Meyer he has done it at three schools, and one was Utah.

Gene Chizik just checking to see if you read the list. He got lucky at Auburn, he sucked at Iowa State

Texas Jefe

Come and take it

I'm going:

Bear Bryant, just because he was my kind of coach
Knute Rockne, just great for college football. Did you see that movie? Awesome
Bud Wilkinson, the winning streak, years of excellence

Honorable Mention: Bill Snyder. A great coach, amazing what he does with what he has to work with each year.

Barry was 5-3 vs. Jimmy

Yes, i forgot the wins over OSU. Different story when the talent was equal and coaching made a difference. I still have Lavell over him

You can disagree, but he is one of the greatest football minds of the last few decades. Unbelievable coach. Anyone doubting that does not understand the game.

Honestly, I dont know why anyone would have Switzer over Wilkerson. Wilkerson cemeted OU's place in CFB history. He is credited with inventing the 5-2, some know it as the Oklahoma front. He would drop the DEs out in coverage on occasion, which would give the defense a modern 3-4 look. The 3-4 became the rage in the NFL as guys like Bum Philips (from Ok State) and Chuck Fairbanks (from OU) installed it. If you are going to be a homer, at least pick the right guy.

Why don't you let others pick their own favorite coach (especially from the program they are a fan of)? That's now two teams that you've told fans of those teams that they are wrong :L
