Where does Elway rank among NFL GMs?

  • Top 5

  • Top 10, he's good but I want to see him do it for longer

  • Middle of the pack, too many mistakes

  • Near the bottom, he just got lucky with Manning

The altitude factor for his arm is really overplayed, it doesn't make that much of a difference.

Having a good line, especially a good left tackle in Ryan Clady was also definitely a factor. DT wasn't really DT yet, though. He'd had a great game in the playoffs against the Steelers, but he didn't really have a breakout season until 2012.
I think Denver's previous GM deserves more credit for getting Peyton than Elway because Peyton joined the team that the other GM built before Elway made the right moves.

So you're saying Elway deserves credit because he was able to sell Denver as an attractive location for peyton but the roster he was using as a foundation isnt the reason Peyton went there? Is your idea that Peyton went to Denver based mostly around the notion that Peyton trusted Elway as an act of faith? I tend to think that the roster already in place was a major factor.

...If we are strictly just talking about the 1 championship...Peyton probably doesn't matter except for giving Osweiler a high bar to try and reach.
Yup, that's all I was referring to.

The Broncos had the worst defense in the NFL in 2010, that had risen to 20th in 2011. Elway had already begun a complete overhaul of the roster. The team was a mess when he took over, and he showed that he could get the Broncos on the right track.

No, I don't think the old gm gets any credit for Manning signing with Denver.

I'd say top 5 - with the caveat of the pending doom that always surrounds a club when they invest heavily in free agency

what he has accomplished in the last few years though is remarkable, let's see if they can sustain their success

So Peyton was persuaded by a team going from 32nd to 20th in defense over a team like Arizona that had Larry Fitzgerald and a good defense? If thats what you want to believe but you certainly aren't going to change my opinion with that.

Ozzie Newsome has to be in the discussion, although it took him 10 years to win a Super Bowl after becoming gm.
And essentially 2 franchises.

Elway has 3 rings as a hof player and now gm.

Not much more comes to mind for other guys.

Then tell me why he picked Denver?
