You guys who are up North ... why on earth does Chip want to trade/release Evan Mathis??? What am I missing? The dude is still one of the better Guards in the league and it's not like we have anything behind him that we need to make room for. Matter of fact we need a starting RG .... if we trade Mathis, we need 2 new starting Guards! Can someone enlighten me? Because getting rid of Mathis right now makes ZERO sense.

My gut is because of his current contract/age. I think Chip wants younger and cheaper to fill spots. My guess he may have someone on his radar in FA to replace Mathis? Other than that, who really knows what Chip has up his sleeve?

I agree, it makes zero sense to flat out release him.. unless we bring in Stefen Wisniewski.

Mathis has been chirping about his contract for at least 2 years now. He's 33 years old. Makes $5-6 M/year and thinks he deserves more? Get a life, Man! He's good, but also been injured. Shut up and play....idiot! Chip wants team players - period. I doubt he gets traded - too much money for an older player. They tried to deal him last year, so he most likely will get cut. I hope Chip gets a good replacement for him. I don't dislike Mathis, but wish these guys would sign a contract and be satisfied with it.

We already have a hole at RG, now if we release Mathis (who's been rated as a top 3 Guard the last 2 seasons) ... we will have 2 holes in the interior. So we bring in Murray and Mathews and have them run behind a weak interior? I don't care how much Mathis chirps ... I hope Chipper has a plan.

There's been no rumblings about why they would move on from him, but clearly a pattern is emerging:

Djax, shady and now Mathis. Like Duke said, chip wants guys who love to ball and hate to talk.

I really think this is just part of the process related to the "Culture". Chip wants guys who want to be there and are happy with how they are treated. By letting the agent snoop around, what they should learn is that he is well paid and the grass is not greener elsewhere. At the end of the day, I think Mathis comes back, hopefully with the right attitude as he knows the Eagles are treating him fairly.

The other approach would be just to tell him to shut up and do his job (fair enough and easy enough to do), but you may end up with a disgruntled guy in the locker room which you don't want.

Mathis is underpaid. He is a top 5 OG & isn't paid like one. Good luck trying to find a FA replacement for him if he is cut. Outside of the top 3 FA OG(s), the position is pretty weak this year.

No question he is well paid and arguably exactly the 5th best paid.

NFL Salary Rankings | Spotrac

You can cut this a couple of different ways based on signing bonus proration and the like, so you can argue he is not top 5 but still close to it.

I am actually wondering if the Eagles are asking him to take a cut? You miss seven games and expect a raise? Seems unlikely.

The base pay is not an accurate way to figure out a player's compensation. Cap hit is a better measurement. Newly signed players & guys early in their contract will often have a low first year or two salaries, which doesn't reflect the true value of their pay. Mathis' compensation is ranked about 8th.

I can buy into that math. Being the 8th best paid Offensive Guard in the league is nothing to sneeze at. With line play evaluation being somewhat subjective, its a reasonably debate whether the guy is the 5th best or the 10th best at his position.

To be 34 years old and coming off a season where you missed seven games, I think you should be pretty happy if you continue to receive the 8th highest pay in the league, even if you are a top 5 player.

That said, I really don't blame a guy for trying. If he can convince the Eagles to bump his salary a little like they did with Barwin, more power to him.

I think Chip is way to quick to give to judge a situation. You cant undervalue a guy like Mathis. He is the best in the game. If chip thinks cutting Mathis on an already thinning line is going to help the team next season he hasn't a clue especially when your trying to give Demarco Murry holes to run with no fullback.

Talk about quick to judge. Kelly hasn't done a thing except let an agent gauge interest and you are already judging him.

Kelly however, has kept these guys around for two years before making these changes (if he makes them). I think he knows what he is getting with Mathis.

Mathis is still here, so the whole trade thing could just be Mathis wants more money, Chip/Howie say no (I say Howie because he is still in charge of contracts) Agent says will you trade him, Chip says bring us offers. If they get no offers he keeps Mathis until the draft. If he gets the guy he wants at guard he releases him and uses the money elsewhere. If he doest get the guy he wants he keeps Mathis for another year.

Also I believe Chip is going to use Barbre at RG. Which I believe is a good move. He is as good as Heremens and 3 or 4 years younger. Chip will draft at least one probably two offensive lineman at some point in this draft, depth and competition.

Dude Chip has the final say and the power. The decision to cut or trade Mathis is solely on him. Im not trying to be quick to judge Chip but usually where there is smoke there is fire when it comes to Chips personnel moves and if Chip flat out cuts Mathis like he did Djax than I will indeed judge him on those actions being that I do not believe that it would be in the best interests of the team.

Its fine to disagree with the decision if it's made. But To Call Kelly quick to judge when he cuts him after coaching him for two years is really ludicrous.

Why is it ludicrous? This is the first year Kelly has had the power to make all the calls. What if Kelly is under valuing Mathis skill set? If you were GM would you cut him without weighing out the consequences? or would you be quick to assume your system doesn't need skilled players like Mathis to make holes for Murray?

Any opinion that Kelly has on Mathis is the result of two years expereince. Right or wrong, it's not quick to judge.

what is quick to judge and ludicrous is judging moves before they even happen. Suppose Kelly gets a first round pick back for him? Is is still a bad deal? You know nothing but one side of a rumor and already have an opinion. Lol
