What's the deal with Gardiner?

If a defenseman or goalie is available Garth Snow needs to be involved in possibly acquiring him. The problem is if the goalie or defenseman makes more than the league minimum he likely won't be able to afford to acquire him.

The left winger on my line is a big Islanders fan and a Gardiner fan and we were talking about the situation last night. He mentioned Andrew MacDonald as an idea, and while I wouldn't personally be interested in him I think he seems like the kind of generally overrated asset that Carlyle and Nonis seem to like.

AMAC is playing about 30 minutes per night. Could Gardiner do that? I don't think so. MacDonald is also cheap as hell making something like 550/600K. The only downside for the Leafs in the deal is MacDonald is an UFA at the end of the season.

Lets be honest what Gardiner did to the Ducks was bullshit. If the Leafs can't find a place for him on their roster on a nightly basis that's their problem. I don't see any reason why they should want the moon for this kid. To me he's still a prospect who hasn't proven he belongs in the NHl yet.

Wait a minute, what did he do to the Ducks that was "bullshit"? Are you thinking of Justin Schultz?

He had 7 goals and 23 assists in his rookie year in 2011-12. Here are all of the Islanders defensemen that have had 30 point seasons in the last 10 years

Mark Streit (x3)
Tom Poti (2006-7)
Chris Campoli (2005-6)
Audrian Aucoin (2003-4)

He's playing 30 minutes a night but doing so ineffectively. In his defense he's facing tough competition, but the numbers are not good even despite that.

The fact that he's going to be a UFA is why you should want the Isles to move him. You won't want to pay him what he's gonna end up costing, especially if they keep playing him 30 minutes a night.

Yeah my mistake I was thinking of Schultz. The Ducks traded Gardiner because they thought they had Schultz signed. My bad.

Like Justin Schultz, Jake Gardiner played his collegiate hockey with the Wisconsin Badgers. I guess Badgers don't like Ducks (lol).

Kid has all the tools but it seems like he's not putting it together. Is he hurt or something? I know there have been rumors of him not fitting the model the coach wants. There's also been trade rumors but isn't the price ridiculously high for a guy not playing well?

Sorry if this was discussed elsewhere.

A Del Zotto for Gardiner swap would be awesome. We all know Gardiner wants to play with his Ex-Badgers, McDonagh and Stepan.

To be honest AMAC wants to stay. I'm not sure the Isles will resign him though. They really can't afford to give up a defenseman for another defenseman. They need to add a couple of them. AMAC is playing so much out of necessity. The D is simply awful. Visnovksy has a concussion. Strait is on IR not that I think he's any good. Calvin De Haan got called up the other day & I honestly didn't think he would ever play an NHL game. This is the worst defense corp I've ever seen the Islanders have. I've been a fan since 1980 when I was 8 years old.

Gardiner was a 1st round pick of the Ducks. They thought they had a deal done & he chose not to sign. It was a shitty thing to do that's all.

I don't remember the circumstances behind Gardiner's decision to go to college since it was a while ago but I'll take your word for it. But I'd surmise that the GM that actually drafted him for Anaheim couldn't have been terribly offended by what happened given that he turned around and traded for him with the Leafs 3 years later.

Hadn't read your correction when I wrote this, ignore it.

Hickey's good, and was a steal. And getting Visnovsky back will help. But yeah, their blue line doesn't have much back there.

The Isles were my first favourite team, their first Stanley Cup win is the first playoffs I watched on TV (although I was only 2.5 years old so "watched" may be a little generous). I basically learned how to score goals without blazing foot speed entirely by watching Mike Bossy.

I guess the first time I actually watched hockey I was 3 years old at a San Diego Gulls game. The 1980 Olympics was really the first time I remember watching hockey. Most members of my family are Flyers fans. When I found out Ken Morrow was an Islander I wanted to watch the playoffs on TV with everybody else. Mike Bossy is my favorite player of all time. It sucked that his career was cut short by a back injury.

I still remember breaking my stick "accidentally" on purpose so that I could get a new Titan and get this poster from Canadian Tire, I was so happy!

The way that guy saw openings in the offensive zone and used space out there was amazing. You can score goals with skill, but you can't be a truly great goal scorer without anticipation and understanding.

That's an awesome poster. I still can't believe the Canadiens passed on him.

I bet it's still rolled up in the closet in my old room at my parents' place, now that it's on my mind I'm going to look for it when I fly up there to visit them at Christmas. I picked up the Gretzky "Skating" one and the Bob Gainey "Checking" one from Canadian Tire in the following years but the Bossy version kept the prime spot above my headboard.

I said it earlier, I really like Gardiner and if the Flames can swing a deal to land him, I'd be pleased.

Please just let us keep him. You can have Mark Fraser instead? Take him for free

Rangers had 2 scouts at the Leafs/Sharks game last night, wouldn't shock me to see us scouting him.
