Forget logistics and other sports for a second. There are some G5 programs that deserve to be competing at the top level, since they have a ceiling in the the current playoff structure.

Here are some programs that come to mind:
BYU - has won a natty. Puts a competitive team together a lot of years.
Houston - old SWC school that has recently upgraded facilities. If Baylor and Tech are in they should be too.
Cincinnati - big school, good location and stadium, rivalry with Louisville
UCF - 2 major bowl appearances the last 5 years. Good market.
Boise St - imo the most impressive G5 school
UConn - has a good history
Memphis - great location, recent success
Colorado St - growing student body. New facilities.
SDSU - big population and no Chargers in the city anymore

2nd tier:
USF
Temple
SMU

Boise State

That's it.

Utah and TCU already joined P5 conferences, other than the occasional pop up season, Boise State is the only one consistently good enough IMO.

I think Boise St, BYU, Houston, Cincy, and UCF could all be better than bottom dwellers in a power 5 conference

Where's a team like UCF gonna go? The ACC and SEC had the Florida media market down, and they won't be interested in adding another Florida school, and they're so far away from any other P5 conference.

I could see Cincinnati's value as the B1G has a stranglehold on Ohio. Big 12 or ACC might hop aboard them.

USF has been more consistent than UCF...they weren't 0-12 3 years ago they were 8-5 and they weren't 6-7 last year, they were 11-2. Granted they weren't 12-0 this year, but they were a respectable 9-2.

and they already showed that they could transition through a coaching change when Taggert left.

Y'all went 60 some years without even playing Cincinnati, now you want to add them to your conference? Good luck with that.

UCF and the Orlando market would be perfect for the B12. Travel wouldn't be much different than West Virginia.
Cincy would be a better program than Indiana, Illinois, Rutgers has been. Cincy would be a good team for the B12 as well.

USF:
136-103 overall
0 AAC Championships
49k enrollment

UCF
225-202 overall
3 AAC Championships
66k enrollment

you could make the argument for either school but I think UCF is the more attractive add for a conference

I'd rather they go to the Big 12

This post reminds me of the idea I had for playoff stuff.....

4 Major 16 team conferences
4 Minor 16 team conferences

Every year teams could play their way in or out of the Major conferences. Overachieving lesser conference teams could climb into the Minor conference, and underachieving Minor teams could slide out into the lesser team conferences.

USF and UCF need to be in.

I have no problem with Houston, Boise, Colo State, San Diego St or BYU.

I really don't have an issue with Memphis either. But the last few years are
not the norm for Memphis

Cincy I'm leery of.

UCONN doesn't belong. They started out pretty decent but they have faded big-time.

I'll give you three other names also.

East Carolina. They draw as good as most of the bottom feeders already in P5.
SMU. They're slowly rebuilding their program. Don't even worry about James and
Dickerson. Long before them they had Kyle Rote and Doak Walker in the same
backfield. Plus in the early 60's Dandy Don at QB.
Fresno State. The original giant killer. They draw close to 40K every game also.

Like a relegation style system, I would be down for that. And then for other sports you keep the conferences currently how they are.

BYU has a big stadium and a national following because of their mormon heritage, they also almost completely fill their stadium at all times even this year when they sucked.

UCF has a good stadium too, they have managed to carve out their own market and following in the state of Florida, their massive enrollment helps.

Houston - similar to UCF they have carved out their own market in the city of Houston, they already recruit rather well, Big 12 teams didn't even want them in because they would make it even more difficult for other teams to recruit the city of Houston.

and well I think you guys can assume who I voted for my 4th vote

We can all speculate, but the real problem is more simple. The only differences between a G5 program and a power five one are;
  1. money
  2. money
  3. money
  4. money and
  5. money
Boise St. is a good university, over 23,000 students, and sports programs that compete solidly in every level. 5 20+ win seasons in a row in basketball, conference championships in a half dozen sports, and so on. It has a modern football stadium and a basketball facility that holds over 12,000. It has the best winning record of any d-1 school in the 21st century.

But none of that means a thing to the wonks who decide when a conference is to expand and then who to invite. Then it's a game of the size of the TV market, the size of the endowment fund, how many doctorate programs it has, and other stuff that boils down to, you guessed it, money. That's why Maryland, Rutgers, Colorado, TCU, and Utah got bids while Boise got snuffed in the last go around.

Feudalism is still alive in the world, it's found in the university system.

It's about the money. No one is paying to watch potato peeling contest. Boise will never have the numbers. Location will continue to kill them.

Nice list, but....
to that 2nd tier list I would also add:
- Fresno State...they are more of a common man's team as compared with the snooty/elite academic atmosphere of Cal & Stanford.
- Tulane...outstanding academics and a former member of the SEC, with a brand new stadium...plus they are in New Orleans.
