If Kirk Cousins signs the franchise tag the Skins are fucked. It would be a plan that backfired on them and Cousins still holds all the cards. Tagging Cousins is just under $29 mil and that entire amount goes against the Cap. The reason his tag amount is that high is because he had been tagged twice previously and there is 20% increase for each additional year a player is tagged. I think that is more than half of the Skins 2018 free agency/rookie pool money. They could give him the transition tag which is much cheaper at $19 million but it is a very bad strategic move because everyone in the NFL knows that the Skins will not pay $19 mil for a backup QB especially since that entire amount counts against the cap. The Skins have a lot of holes and can't afford to play salary cap chicken with a QB they have no intention of keeping on the roster
