I like it but I think its overdue, not sure why it took this long, it was discussed earlier this year during one of the meetings and they decided to "let the programs handle it themselves"...

Id rather see us go the same route that the BIG did and toss the FCS games altogether too but, at least its a start.
Better games is always a good thing.

I fixed your post to include actual records. And, as I thought, you're playing the "name game" and those have little meaning without context. You also change the span, you started out with "the BCS" era but now have included 1997. Since 1998 (18 seasons) Texas has played 62 OOC games (non-Bowl Games). Of those 62 games, only 19 were against majors and of those 19 majors only 11 had winning records. Also, of the 62 OOC games only 5 were against AP ranked teams (year ranked). For perspective, there are 64 P5 teams (excluding ND since they aren't in a conference). Where does Texas stack up in the field of 64 teams?

Well, the 19 Majors in 62 games is 30.65% which ranks Texas as #40 of the 64.
The 11 major teams teams with winning records in 62 games is 17.74% which ranks Texas #38 of the 64.
The 5 AP ranked opponents in 62 games is 8.06% which ranks Texas as #54 of the 64 teams. That puts Texas in the bottom half of the P5 teams in EACH category.

For the record, my team (UF) has played 65 OOC games since 1998. Of those 65 games, 23 were against majors and of those 23 majors 23 had winning records. Also, of the 65 OOC games 17 were against AP ranked teams (year ranked). Where does Florida stack up in the field of 64 teams?

Well, the 23 Majors in 65 games is 35.38% which ranks UF as #32 of the 64.
The 23 major teams teams with winning records in 65 games is 35.38% which ranks Florida #5 of the 64.
The 17 AP ranked opponents in 65 games is 26.15% which ranks Florida as #6 of the 64 teams. That puts Florida in the top half of the P5 teams in EACH category.

There is too much focus on FCS teams. UF has played 10 FCS teams vs 1 for Texas over the span 1998-2015 but it hasn't hurt UF. What difference does it make whether UF schedules an FCS team or a sucky teams from the MAC, AAC, Sunbelt, or MWC? There are PLENTY of bad teams out there. The difference is that UF has scheduled GOOD teams. Instead of making rules banning certain games (like FCS) the conferences should focus on good scheduling instead. For example, require teams to schedule at least one game per year with a P5 opponent that finished in the top half of their conference for the same number of years as the games is away. If a team want to schedule a game for the year 2020 (5 years away) then the team they want to schedule must be in the top half of their conference for the PAST 5 seasons. Thus, for a game vs the Big Ten for 2020 the only teams to choose from are tOSU, MSU, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Michigan, PSU, or Iowa.

Yes, we can predict the actual records of the teams we schedule. Good call adding them in. /sarcasmfont

And then you argue that FCS teams may be as good as shitty P5 teams, but you also argue amount of P5 teams scheduled for Florida.

yeah, I started at 97 because we played the same team as in 98... so? what point did you want to make with that?... the BCS ERA was an arbitrary starting point in the first place.

NC has been ranked a total of 5 times in the past 25 seasons. So to expect NC to be a ranked opponent when you play them 4-5 years later to just a pipe dream.

No! #1, My point was that P5 teams CAN be just as shitty as FCS teams so just to ban playing FCS teams WILL NOT NECESSARILY improve the schedules. #2, UF only played 23 P5 teams (vs 19 for Texas, not much difference) but all 23 had winning records vs only 11 for Texas.

We scheduled them when they were a TOP5 team. What could you possibly complain about that? Should we schedule only tOSU every year? Or maybe Michigan? Michigan went to shit for a while, too. You'd be complaining about that scheduling too.

Have you looked at UT's OOC schedule during Mack's reign vs same length before Mack? It is enlightening.

Here is a comparison of UT's OOC schedule from 1982-1997 (16 seasons) vs UT's OOC schedule from 1998-2013 16 seasons of MB). I am removing the OU game from the OOC schedule from 1982-1996 since the game is still played but now counts as an IN conference game (i.e., I am treating ALL OU games as IN conference games).

1982-1997 UT played 55 OOC games ; 43 vs majors ; 33 vs majors with winning records ; 25 vs AP ranked teams ; and 11 vs AP top5. (WITH OU games)

1982-1997 UT played 41 OOC games ; 29 vs majors ; 21 vs majors with winning records ; 15 vs AP ranked teams ; and 8 vs AP top5. (without OU games)

1998-2013 UT played 56 OOC games ; 16 vs majors ; 8 vs majors with winning records ; 3 vs AP ranked teams ; and 3 vs AP top5.

When you schedule a team, you have to schedule by the name.
Who the hell can make sure a team is going to be a ranked team 5 years in the future.

Did Notre Dame think they were scheduling a (5-7) Texas team when they announced the series in 2010???

Texas played a shitty Arkansas team in 2008 which cost them that tiebreaker for the Natty.
Arkansas was the SEC West champion when the game was planned.
Meanwhile OU scheduled a (4-7) Conference USA team from Cincinnati who became a (10-2) ranked Big East champ when it was played.

TEXAS has always scheduled well by taking their chances with named teams.
Sometimes UCLA is good. Sometimes UCLA sucks. But, you try your best with the named programs.

100+ years of playing at least one current POWER 5 team OOC.
