So I was wrong on that call. Effectively drops our cap space down to a shade under $18 million.

And he receives ELITE money for at least 1 year. So in essence, we paid our own what he thinks he is worth for 1 year and continue to negotiate a LTC. Next...

I think I would have rather had him hit fa at this point but not the worst thing to have happen. Still a really good player we have for at least one more year.

I think it is the right move. Orakpo gets paid a very good salary for a year on a show me you continue to earn it situation. This way he stays motivated to continue to earn top money and if he has an "elite" year then management has to pay him or let him walk.

But how is that different than what just happened? Next year we'll likely be in the same exact spot again.

If they dont get a long term deal done...Yes they would be.....However, they would have a 1st round pick to try and find his replacement, and we will hopefully not have as many holes as well, which would make things a little easier on losing a player...

I think it too the right move. However, i don't think this is good for either party. Rak is the highest rated OLB in this year's FA in a weak class. Next year he won't be so lucky. There are some studOLBs turning FA next year. Rak will be a smaller fish in a smaller pool. It could bite him in the ass. For the skins, it easts up a huge chuck of cap space in a year when we have a lot of holes to fill and now a dwindled pot. It will hurt us.

Correct. It's a double edged sword. I would have been okay letting him walk too. What I didn't want to see was a long term contract at too high a figure. Apparently management didn't want to meet his terms so they used the one year contract. Next year the money is available again if that is what Allen & company want to do. As you said their is a better crop of FAs next year so more options available because they will have a No. 1 draft choice again.

Yes sir, if I am correct we have a full compliment of picks next year. We just have to be sure to save our 2016 or 17 pick for Christian Hackenburg.

Putting the franchise tag on RAK allows us more time to negotiate a long term deal. Is everybody overlooking that fact?

Nope.. but in the past five seasons, how many players that have been tagged in order to give more time to negotiate a long term deal, have actually gotten signed to long term deals?? Lets see..

Byrd?? Nope
Spencer of the Cowboys?? double Nope
Vincent Jackson of the charger.. opps I mean the Bucs now.

In most recent cases one of two things has happened.

1. The guy played under the tag and had a good year, thus driving his price up.. and he leaves
2. the guy plays under the tag and has a bad year or gets injured... and then he still leaves.

More often than not a guy who gets tagged is playing his last year for that team.

Oh wait.. did I forget Haynesworth?? Wasnt he tagged by the Titans the year before we signed him?? Under the idea that it would give them more time to work out a long term contract?

By the way, dont look now. But Rappaport is reporting that Rak has no intentions of signing the tender at this time. So now begins the stand off until July 15th to try and hammer out a long term deal.

Down sides to this are, unless he signs the damn thing, he can not participate in off season team activities as he would still be considered a player not under contract until he signs. If a long term deal isnt worked out by July 15th, then Rak would play under the tender and we couldnt broach the subject again until February of 2015.

Think Rappaport got a bunch of extra hits for this headline, because that is all he was going for.
