The Iron Horse
Smartass
He wanted the New York and DC area markets, but he failed to realize that no one there gives two shits about Maryland or Rutgers. They'll have a noticeable spike in fan interest for the first couple years, but then the honeymoon phase will be over after they repeatedly get their dicks kicked in and people will lose all interest again.
Maryland might have hope, but Rutgers is not exactly on an upward trajectory right now.
If I may. I live in NY, and I can tell you that if Godzilla fought, or fucked King Kong in the middle of the Rutger's campus, is the only way anyone would care about the Scarlett Knights. But, that's not what is important. I have long contested, that Rutgers joining the B1G is in fact, the biggest and most important move any conference could make. And is even bigger that both Tejas and ND joining a new conference together. And here is why.
Okay, so it is all about the BTN. Fox owns 49 or 51% of the BTN. They also own the YES network (that's the Yankees Network). The YES network is extremely popular in NY. Now, the plan is to get BTN on basic cable in NY, to its 8+ million inhabitants. Now, when Fox sits at the table with Time Warner Cable, NY's largest cable distributor. They will show them, all the Rutgers alums living in NY. Plus, all the B1G alums living in NY. Enough of them to get it on basic cable. If TW balks at the idea. Fox can say, then we are taking YES network, and FX, Fox News, and some other channels off, until you do. TW will agree.
Rutgers is Las Vegas, before it was Las Vegas, when all it was was just a shack where you could gamble and spend the night before heading to L.A. As for Maryland. They are the sixth largest market in the nation, they are on Basic cable, but the amount the B1G can receive now per subscriber should spike, now that Maryland is on board with the BTN. So, for example, BTN gets only 30 cents per subscriber for the BTN, in both Baltimore, and DC market. When Maryland joins, that could spike to say 1.10.
Jim Delany knows what he is doing. And I also believe, he won't stop with 16 teams. I think he is going to go to 20 teams, and split them in 4 pods of 5 teams each.
