Part of the recent offensive problems is that they are not putting the ball in play. At least a ground out or a fly out has the potential to advance or score a base runner. A strikeout does nothing for you. In the list below, the first number after the player's name shows the pace they are on for total strikeouts this year. The second number shows their strikeout frequency per at bat.
Haniger 200 32.1%
Beckham 190 34.5%
Santana 190 28.9%
Bruce 162 35.8%
Smith 157 34.0%
Healy 133 23.1%
Encarnacion 129 25.0%
Vogelbach 95 26.3%
Narvaez 95 22.2%
Gordon 86 15.7%
Murphy 62 43.4%
And Bishop, who just arrived, is fitting right in: 42.9%

If you need a reference: Mike Zunino strikes out 37.4% of the time. So, several of these guys are K-ing at close to Zunino rates.

Surprised Haniger is striking out so much. That's likely the reason for his struggles this far at the plate.

13-2 was good enough for this ball club. Now back to losing.

Yeah got butthurt when they started losing, turned the off, ( that and the NFL draft interfered)
I need to tune in again and just ride this thing out, I knew they were going to be crappy this year and that start just got the hopes up and reality was put to the back of my mind.

He's pressing! He's trying to carry this team and it's not his way...

I think he'll come around.

For what it's worth, Haniger is still on pace for 35 HRs and 53 doubles. Obviously those numbers will come down, but I also anticipate his BA/OBP will trend back to his career norms.

One of the few "experimental" type moves that I do approve of is having him hit first or second. Normally you have the best hitter on the team hit 3rd, but this gives him more plate appearances and with Dee Gordon hitting 9th or 1st, he has some great speed ahead of him and is an above average runner himself.

Welp...

Today's our chance to step back into sub-.500 territory, depending on how long we can keep this early lead.

Anticipating an immediate choke on the horizon.

Wondering what is wrong with the offense? This might have something to do with it. Mariner Batting Averages and On Base Percentage over the last 30 days.
Crawford .444/.444
Narvaez .302/.423
Moore .259/.355
Vogelbach .194/.348
Encarnacion .191/.330
Gordon .267/.312
Haniger .200/.310
Santana .248/.306
Murphy .300/.300
Healy .205/.280
Beckham .209/.250
Long .000/.250
Bruce .184/.235
Smith .098/.179
Bishop .105/.105

The team batting average over the last 30 days is .217.
21.1% of their hits are homeruns. Think maybe they might be too obsessed with the long ball? Here are some comparisons:
In 2018 12.6% of Mariner hits were homeruns.
In 2018 World Series winner Boston Red Sox hit homeruns among 13.8% of their hits.
Their WS opponent, Los Angeles Dodgers, hit homeruns on 16.9 % of their hits.
Can Scott Servais get anyone besides Gordon and Narvaez, to play fundamental baseball on offense? I can't see Bruce, Encarnacion, Santana, Healy, nor Beckham inspired to manufacture runs. Just don't see it. And it makes no sense because their future employment in MLB most likely depends on it.

Oh, an on a final note, the Mariners have three position players among the AL's top 10 in strikeouts.

Dee Gordon is an RBI machine this year. WTF is up with that? Career high is 46 and he is on pace for....75? A l'il ole banjo hitter with 75 RBI? Tommy Herr would be so proud.

It was impressive what the M's did early the season, but it was all fools gold... M's are simply not a good baseball team, about the only thing I'm looking forward to is seeing Jarred Kelenic make his M's debut some day ...

And even there, it's gonna be ruined as he's probably going to be told to kowtow to the other team like everyone else during this supposed "rebuild."

It's just an aberration IMO.

I've never been a fan of using RBIs as a measure of how a hitter is doing. To accumulate a decent number of RBIs you need to be hitting at the right place at the right time. A lot of it has to do with the guys ahead of him getting on base. He also has 3 HRs so far and his career high is 4.

I don't think anyone figured that start was even remotely sustainable.

The Mariners aren't as good as their 13-2 start, but I don't believe they're as bad as their 7-21 stretch.

I think my preseason projection was around 75 wins which I think is roughly what they're on pace for right now.

I root for them to win every game, but I do think it's best for the team to tank as strong as possible so that we land a high draft pick.

Yeah I think we all knew it wasn't sustainable, but watching them now, this team just quits on this manager, no spark at all ... losing close games is one thing, but they're getting smacked around like a minor league team, it's sad to watch...

Welp, we can confirm now...

The whole point of this season is to choke it away as soon as possible.

Thanks for intentionally quitting on us, guys. Most teams at least try to make things entertaining for their fans, even when in a rebuilding stage, but you just seem content just to stop trying and provide us with another year or five of misery.

Shred your schedules, guys. This season is DONE.

Seriously, I taught in CA from 85 to 90.

Kept telling those kids how happy I would be when the M's won the WS.
Truly can't believe I'm still waiting.

Sonics had WON, Seahawks in the Same Boat. Thank you Seahawks.

Still Waiting M's.

I honestly feel the run in 95 was a one time deal for us to suffer for the next 50 years!

Yea losing is one thing but I am just not a fan of how this team is made up right now. Rebuilding or not this just isnt a team I can get behind for anything. I already suffered through what the 2013 Mariners were in year 5 of that regime and this is team has the same makeup but its in year 4 of the following regime. Not to mention the current GM vowed to take the opposite approach as the previous GM. So yeah I just cant watch more then a few innings a week let alone a full game, its just not very enjoyable.

Going to the game on Friday night. Hopefully they're not wrecked early on. Too fucking expensive to get drunk at the stadium.
