Good gravy, is Gio Bernard fun to
watch. He possesses the LeSean McCoy ability of
busting out on every play, and his diminutive size
makes it that more aesthetically-pleasing when
he goes the distance.
The Who-Deys have hung tough in the face of
season-ending injuries to Geno Atkins and Leon
Hall , but overcoming the loss of cornerback
Terence Newman might be a bridge too far for the
Bengals. I’m also in the minority of folks who
don’t envision the Steelers throwing in the towel
on Sunday night, making Cincinnati a dangerous
dice roll this weekend.
After stumbling out of the gate, the
Steelers have been a top-10 unit against the
pass.

Baltimore’s becoming a trendy pick
to do some damage in the postseason, with five
of the team’s six losses coming by six points or
less. Alright, I guess I can dance to that beat.
However, let me play devil’s advocate: four of the
team’s last five victories have come by three
points or less. So yeah, feel free to say the
Ravens could be 11-2. In that same breath, they
could easily be 2-11.

Jim Schwartz is on the hot seat again, as the
team’s recent sputter (dropping three of the past
four) has allowed the Bears and Packers back in
the division hunt. Sure, I can understand why
those in Motown are upset at the prospect of
another disappointing season despite a plethora
of talent.

In Week 8 of the 2011 season, the 5-2
Saints, who finished 13-3, visited the
0-6 Rams, who finished 2-14. In one of
the more stunning upsets of that
season, the Rams won , 31-21.
Additionally, in Week 10 of 2009, the
season the Saints won the Super Bowl,
New Orleans, then undefeated, barely
escaped St. Louis with a 28-23 victory
against the 1-7 Rams, who finished
1-15.
This season, the Rams are loaded with
explosive young talent on offense and
their defense has been tougher than a
diner steak at times, making them
more than capable of pulling off an
upset. The Saints will win, but only by
the skin of their teeth.

It speaks to the weakness of the A.F.C.
that Jacksonville, which started 0-8
and appeared to be without hope, can
actually make the playoffs if it wins
the last three games. A seemingly
countless number of dominoes need to
fall their way, but it is possible.

For a team with only three playoff
wins in the past 21 years, and one
with no chance of making the
postseason this time, Washington sure
does get a lot of attention. Anyone
who tuned in to recent television or
radio sports shows knows about the
drama surrounding the Redskins’
three-headed turmoil monster: the
owner, Dan Snyder; Coach Mike
Shanahan; and quarterback Robert
Griffin III. The Redskins might be the
most talked-about 3-10 team in N.F.L.
history. Imagine if they were good!

After watching Rob Ryan’s Saints
defense do a number on Cam Newton
and Carolina’s offense, Rex Ryan
called his brother to get some pointers
on shutting the Panthers down.
“Oh, yeah, without question I’ve
already talked to him,” Rex Ryan told
reporters on a conference call
Wednesday. “Our defenses are two
different defenses. He has his own
style, so do we. But again, without
question I’ve already talked to him
about the things he picked up. Just
anything you would do against any
opponent, but in particular he just
played them this past week.”
That’s all fine and good, but Drew
Brees does not play quarterback for
the Jets, and neither does anyone else
who is remotely competent.

All A.F.C. West rivalries involving
Oakland were so much more
entertaining when Al Davis was alive,
mainly for the regular camera shots of
him, sitting in the owner’s box and
resembling a cartoon villain. You’re
gone but far from forgotten, Al.

straight, is 0-11 in Indianapolis and is
3-11 against the spread in its last 14
games, is the underdog in this game
by less than a touchdown is one of

Greg Schiano’s suddenly resurgent
Buccaneers have won four of their last
five, including a 27-6 dismantling of
Buffalo in Weeek 14, and bear little
resemblance to the team that started
the season 0-8.
With the 49ers coming off an
emotional, bruising 19-17 win against
division rival Seattle, and having to
travel cross-country for an early
kickoff, this has all the makings of a
classic letdown game. But look for San
Francisco to grind out a victory.
