That may or may not be true, and there are plenty of times rain and wind favor the underdog, but this is not one of those times. Wind and rain make it harder on teams that pass the ball a lot (the Saints) and work in the favor of teams that don't pass a lot (the Seahawks)

for ex, the Seahawks have the #4 rushing offense and the #26 passing offense

while the Saints have the #25 rushing offense and the #2 passing offense

Sports Betting Stats:
When a game is played in wet conditions the game will be won or lost in the trenches, which is on the line. When it is a wet day the power run game that takes place in between the tackles is most important because it is harder to sweep block to the outside. It is also hard for the QB to throw in wet conditions, as it is harder get a good grip on the ball (same with receivers catching the ball).
One weather condition that many sports bettors tend to overlook is the wind. Wind will change a game more then snow or rain will. Teams that live and die with the passing game will not be able to execute their game plan as well when there are gusty winds.

and from an article in a New Orlean paper yesterday:
Saints will take on the top-seeded Seattle Seahawks in CenturyLink Field — where rain and wind could play havoc with the Saints’ passing game. As of Wednesday afternoon, the forecast called for a 100-percent chance of rain with the wind at 21 mph. ...
Saints coach Sean Payton and quarterback Drew Brees often talk about being more concerned with wind, which was the topic Wednesday during Payton’s daily news conference. “The wind means a little bit more; I think you pay close attention to that,” Payton said. “If it gets (stronger than) 15 miles an hour, it impacts what’s going on"

from Advanced NFL Stats:

Wind certainly has an effect on the passing game. Here is AYPA according to wind speed. It's actually the minimum wind speed reported in the official gamebook. Often, the gamebook will report winds as something like 10-15 mph, or 10 gusts to 15. In this case, I took '10' as the wind speed.

AYPAbyWind.png

How does wind affect play calling? (and the game plan) Teams are definitely leaning to the run on windy days, but the effect is only prominent in significantly windy conditions, greater than 15 mph.

Eh, not sure i would read too much into the weather. On paper, it would favor the Seahawks but you never know. Maybe it will cause the hawks to fumble a few times and lose the game.

Guess y'all didn't see the tornado we played in for most of the 2nd half in the Carolina game. Weather won't completely determine the game....outside of footing/etc., it pretty much only determines the style of which you choose to play. It'll be on the 2 pretty good run defenses to stop the run.

This is exactly why the Saints should let me play RB for them this week...I dont care how good the hawks defense is..they hand the ball off to me....I'd be so scared..... they'll be slipping in shit the entire way to the endzone

Simulated crowd - Many teams have tried it. It doesn't help

The Hawks logo on your practice field - Now that's just dumb. Were they tripping over the paint in Seattle or something?

T-shirt, those stats are accurate and they are a good point and a measuring stick that give advantage to a team with a better running game vs passing game WHEN THE TEAMS ARE EQUAL otherwise. Seattle was already the heavy favorite. Any type of extreme abnormality that takes away normal game planning and playing a normal game of football favors the underdog the more abnormal things get.

Playing in the rain and wet conditions is normal for Seattle. What don't you get about this? Seattle is right between an ocean and a mountain range. The warm ocean air gets pushed up when it hits the mountain range, condensates, and that is why you get so much rain in Seattle (which is #6 in the US with 146 days of rain per year) and Portland (which is #3 in the US with 164 days of rain per year). New Orleans isn't even in the top 25 major cities when it comes to number of rain days per year and they are a dome team on top of that

As for wind, there was only one game at Seattle this year with wind over 15mph, which SEA won 45-17

If Seattle had to go to New Orleans and play outdoors in the hot and humid South Louisiana weather in Sept, then the weather would favor New Orleans because they are much more used to it

Wildcard items like bad weather tend to help the underdog.

Regardless of style, the Seahawks are a better team under normal conditions.

But, bad weather adds an element of unknown that usually helps the underdog.

The rain seemed to unglue and disrupt the sound plans of the cold-weather Bengals.

Sunny Dry Powder Pluff Blue Chargers from 70 degree San Diego took advantage of the weather creating some uncertainties and turnovers.

The rain is actually a bad thing for Seattle.

It doesn't seem like it at first with the macho "we are used to playing in it" and "they play in a dome" kneejerk reaction......

But, the last thing a better team wants is something that could affect the outcome besides talent, coaches, and schemes.

So, if the season had played out differently and Seattle was hosting this game, but as an underdog, the cold and wet weather would benefit them? But since they're the favorite it works against them? :wtf2:

I can agree with this. Yes Seattle should be used to playing in cold weather but not sure they would be used to the wind. I lived in Seattle for quite a while and the wind was not an issue 90% of the time so that unknown element could cause a bad bounce here or there for the Seahawks. Head to head the Seahawks are the better team but all it takes is a team getting some lucky calls and/or bounces that could be aided by the weather to go a certain way and this could turn into a pretty good game. This kind of weather also makes it more difficult for Seattle to say get the blowout as the focus will be more towards the run meaning the game should be closer come 4th quarter.

No way Seattle covers 8 1/2.

This game is too close to call.

Seattle peeked a month ago. FG game either way. Possible OT game here.

Wet conditions is a good thing for Seattle all-around. Wet conditions favor run teams (Seattle), disfavor pass teams (Saints), favor teams much more used to it (Seattle) and disfavor teams much less used to it (Saints)

Let's say both teams were heavy passing teams and neither had ever played in the wind or rain in their lives. Both teams would be at the same disadvantage. It is retarded to say the better team would be at a bigger disadvantage because they are the better team.

Advantage, Seattle.

The Seahawks run the ball better than the Saints - or at least aren't as dependent upon their QB. The Saints are pass happy and the wind is going to screw with that.

The team that runs better will win.

I disagree. Weather can help bring teams to equal levels.

Payton is one of the best coaches in the NFL and he will surely have things figured out re: gameplan for the weather conditions.

Payton has one of the best dome records in the NFL. He is not so good at dealing with outdoor games. Under Payton, the Saints are 4-9 outdoors on the road against teams with a winning record
