Caps trade Varly to Colorado for draft picks...Better than Vokoun to the Avs in my opinion.

/Obviously, better as I am a Flames fan...

Gord Miller (TSN): Hearing that Varlamov has signed with Colorado, a deal very similar to Carey Price's with Mtl (2 yrs, $5.5m).

That's total by the way, not per year.

Welcome to the land of 35+ shots a game Varly

Tough to face any shots when you're not in the arena, out with a groin injury. Varly had some great moments here and I'll have fond memories of him. But he could not get healthy with any consistency in 3 years here. For what he wanted, the picks are a much better move for us with Neuvy/Holtby both looking good, healthier, and a cap hit of under $2 million combined. Great move by the Caps.

If Varly can get a 1st and a 2nd, what's the package for Cory Schneider?!?

Varly for a 1st AND a 2nd? Sweet!

And Just asking, but what would the caps have gotten if they didn't trade and just sent an offer sheet?

For the contract he got, Caps would have gotten a first and third round pick. So they did slightly better, and plus it lets them know where they stand in terms of signing other players and knowing he's not in the picture.

I saw someone on Twitter say the Caps and Varly were close to a deal, but the Caps couldn't tell Varly he would be #1, so talks broke off. To me, they were never that serious then.

I read something that said McPhee didn't plan on trading any of the goalies, and he's not a guy that bullshits or plays the media for advantage. If anything, he tends to not say anything, sometimes to the annoyance of the fans.

I have to think they weren't going to give Varly anymore than Neuvirth got - about $2.3 mil over 2 years. With what Colorado paid him, no way the Caps were going to match that. Why pay more than double for a guy whose talent is roughly equal to Neuvy and who has never been as healthy? Especially with a guy in the minors everyone is heaping praise on.

I think they were far apart, and the offer was right.

Also, Sean Collins signed as well. One year deal, no amount disclosed yet, but I'm guessing he'll get around what we made last year - $700K. More indication moves are coming...

I heard that Varly wanted to be guaranteed the starting job or he was going to sign in the KHL. McPhee couldn't guarantee that he'd be the starter so he traded him to the Avs.

Oddly enough, the Avs also sign Giguere and now Varly is not totally assured of the #1 role, especially with his health. Good for Varly though - he's done some impressive stuff. If his groin or hips fail, he's made enough with this contract he's set for life now (something I wasn't sure he'd get this offseason).

Also saw earlier today he didn't want to play for his old KHL team, so it was going to be somewhere in the NHL. Doesn't matter anyway, we stole a 1st and a 2nd! :D
