After two years, preseason games are back in the NFL. There was some revealing play from several players on the Washington Football Team.

Chase Young showed he’s in regular-season form with a swim move that would rock any of Poseidon’s seas to reach Cam Newton for the strip sack. Ryan Fitzpatrick looked comfortable in his first action, finding Terry McLaurin, Logan Thomas and Adam Humphries for big plays against the New England Patriots.

But we’re not interested in talking about the players we know are going to make the 53-man roster when final cuts are levied. Washington’s 22-13 loss to New Englandwas all about the players fighting for playing time or for a roster spot overall.

Some made a case to receive a longer look from the coaching staff. Others may make the coaching staff want to look in the opposite direction.

Here are the players who helped themselves the most after Thursday and those who have set themselves back.

Risers

1. RB Jaret Patterson

The undrafted rookie out of Buffalo got his best opportunity to state his case to be the final running back and didn’t disappoint. Patterson led Washington with 10 carries and 40 yards and four catches for 30 yards. Two of the running back’s carries went for 12 yards each and his longest reception — 11 yards — helped move the sticks for Washington and set up its first touchdown. Running backs coach Randy Jordan said he wanted to see four things from the No. 3 running back — production, ball security, special-teams capability and an ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. Patterson did all four in exemplary fashion against the Patriots. He showed his ability to create when there was nothing there and should’ve been taken down for a loss or a minimal gain. His elusiveness, change of direction and receiving made him an early standout in Washington’s opener.

2. PR DeAndre Carter

As a collective, Washington’s punt return unit finished with a palpable 5.7 yards per return last season. Steven Sims Jr. had a league-high three muffed punts, with one returned for a touchdown and another leading to one, and Isaiah Wright had two muffs. Needless to say, Washington needed some juice. Enter Carter, who, in his first preseason action, returned his two punts for 20 and 18 yards. The journeyman showed explosion, vision and a little slipperiness with the ball in his hands. Which wide receivers make the team will largely be decided by who can contribute on special teams, and Carter just took the inside track with his effort.

3. DT David Bada

When Jonathan Allen was held out of practice to tend to a hamstring injury and Daron Payne and Matt Ioannidis were on the reserve/COVID-19 list, Bada played next to Tim Settle with the first team. Bada used a motor that wouldn’t quit to help push the pocket. That’s how he ended up Washington’s second sack of the game. Working against two interior linemen, Bada kept his legs churning as his teammates stepped into quarterback Mac Jones’ face. Jones tried moving around, but Bada got his hands around Jones’ waist and the rest of the cavalry rallied to ensure the rookie didn’t even think of trying to throw the ball away.

Fallers

1. K Dustin Hopkins

Hopkins’ first preseason action left a lot to be desired and opened the door to competition after he went 0-for-2 against the Patriots. Both of his field goal attempts — one from 40 yards out and one from 50 — went wide left. The first miss was especially disappointing for Washington because the first-team offense just finished its final drive and was in position to take the lead. As the team went last season, so, too, did Hopkins. When Washington started 2-7, he went 12-for-17, but when it went 5-2 and claimed the NFC East title, Hopkins hardly missed, going 15-for-17 in that stretch. He turned that late-season performance into a one-year contract to return. Hopkins had a few misses in the practices leading up to the preseason opener, so it’ll be something to watch. Rivera stood by Hopkins last season, so if he lets him work out his struggles, that wouldn’t be surprising. But if there’s any concern, especially with the competition Washington will face, Rivera may decide to bring someone else in.

2. TE Temarrick Hemingway

The first sack Washington allowed was a result of Hemingway whiffing on a block of Tashawn Bower. Later, Hemingway was completely plowed over by a defensive lineman who then chased Steven Montez and forced an early throw. And even though Hemingway was given three chances to make a catch — two open and one contested — he had no receptions. Hemingway has been given multiple opportunities to succeed — he has gotten regular work with the first-team offense and quarterbacks have been looking in his direction. In his four seasons in the NFL, he has had just two catches, including one last season with Washington, and needs to show more.

3. The final defensive unit

Washington thought it had tied the score until officials ruled Antonio Gandy-Goldendidn’t maintain possession of the ball as he went to the turf on a two-point conversion with 1:26 remaining. No matter. With 1:22 seconds left, Washington’s defense had a chance to get the ball back to the offense with about 30 seconds left. After one kneel-down, Rivera called a timeout to keep time on the clock, and when the Patriots returned, they opted to run the ball. Washington’s defense took a series of poor angles while pursuing running back Rhamondre Stevenson, and one broken tackle later, he ran 91 yards up the right sideline for a touchdown that put the game on ice. That collapse will likely make for a difficult film session once players reconvene this weekend.
