So you all think the lockout will be avoided? Because at this point all parties seem to think it's happening...well, the players do at least. Maybe they're just preparing for the worst.

In the NFL I think the players and owners are both doing so well that when it comes down to it they will avoid a stoppage. Maybe its just wishful thinking.

In the NHL I think it happened because neither side wanted to give at all and a lot of owners were not happy.

I think it's happening.

Over the course of this last CBA, the NFL has grown at an exponential rate, and the value of the teams has grown even faster.

True or not, the players don't feel like they're getting an even slice of that, and this recent crackdown on hits where they're starting to fine players (while I agree with the idea) is poorly timed in the sense that they're taking away from players that already felt they were getting the short end of the stick.

Even though these fines are a drop in the bucket, taking anything away right now is not good for the negotiations.

Beyond comparing it to BS flags I was comparing it Goodell's new fascination with buckling down on a team that is known for smash-mouth football. His fines against players have been equally inconsistent. I sincerely don't blame Harrison for wanting to retire...I'd be ticked too if it were me. However, he is the boss, and when the boss wants you to change, you do it...BUT, that's hard to do when everyone else seems to be doing it the same way without similar repercussions.

The NFL's 'headshot' rule was already in the rulebook. All Goodell did was say that they will be enforcing it. I don't think he has targeted the Steelers. He has not suspended or fined the Steelers proportionally more than he has players from any other team.

That said I do think that this last week the on field officials were targeting the Steelers. There were some persoal foul calls that were very questionable. Whether they were directed to do that by the league office or not is a different discussion and not one I think that anyone can prove one way or another.

I don't disagree that the Steelers got more than their fair share, I just think that it came from an over eager officiating crew not the league office.

I'm glad to see the NFL is consulting Colin Campbell for supplementary discipline decisions...

The Steelers had a roughing the passer call because Harrison was leading with the crown of his helmet. It doesn't matter who you are, the ref is throwing a flag on that every time.

Then the Steelers had a unnecessary roughness penalty on a kick off return for I think a hit on a Bills player out of bounds. That is also a penalty no matter who you are.

Half of the Steelers penalties that game were for offensive holding because Kyle Williams was a fucking beast in that game.

I didn't see anything wrong that would make me believe that the Steelers were being targeted unfairly.

No, trust me, I agree with that. This week the penalties were justified for the most part (Williams was owning Kemoatu all game and he had no other option but to hold him), and PF on the kickoff was justified too...Fox was just an idiot for doing it. However, that was NOT helmet to helmet contact. Even if it was, it was certainly not worth 25k (especially if punching an unsuspecting QB or landing a few right hooks is worth less or the same amount). I'm just saying the system is flawed. You can't have one guy with so much power...and I think that very reason may lead to a lockout.

Is James Harrison retiring?

I seriously wouldn't even blame him at this point. He's paid 125K in fines. Of all the ones he's been fined for I'd say the Massoqui and Young ones were *mostly* justified. These past 2 have been horse poo. And again, the inconsistancy for the amount they're fining guys is wrong:

They need some sort of set number or else people are going to continue to think he's 'picking' on players. Harrison plays hard, but he's NOT dirty.

EDIT: I mean, that hit on Brees was DEFINITELY a penalty. It was late. But 20K?? I mean, all he did was basically run into him! Didn't wrap him up and throw him down!

That's right, it wasn't helmet to helmet, but he led with the crown of his helmet when he made the sack. That act alone is worthy of a penalty and a fine according to the rules set in place by the League.

Harrison led with the crown of his helmet and hit Fitz right under the chin. It doesn't help that Harrison is a repeat offender and says that he will not stop playing the way that he does, even though everyone else must adhere and adjust to the new rules put forth.

There is a reason that he has amassed over $100,000 in fines so far this season, and it's not because he's being picked on.

If that hit alone (no matter who the player) is worthy of a 25k fine, then the league is truly wussifying. I see that it certainly could be percieved as a 15 yard penalty, but that hefty of a fine is ridiculous. The guy is only a repeat offender because of other boarder-line fines.

I think the hit was worth that much because he's a repeat offender, and the League keeps raising his fines to get him to start following the rules that everyone else has to follow and adjust to.

IMO, he's just being stubborn and doesn't like that fact that he can't make the same type of hits that he was allowed to make before this season.

I think the Harrison hit on Fitzpatrick is a penalty. He led with his helmet. He often leads with his helmet. So far I have not seen him fined unjustifiably. I heard Steeler fans complain about the hit on Brees too yet it was his helmet on the back of Bree's helmet.

Harrison's stupidly complaining constantly instead of changing his game is the problem.

Harrison plays hard, but he's NOT dirty.

Whether he is dirty or not is debatable. I wouldn't be amazed if a Raven played exactly like Harrison with the fines and all, if you would lean to the side of him being dirty. Leading with your helmet time and time again isn't exactly clean, its trying to injure someone.

Oh, come now...that's beside the point! Every Raven is dirty! :)
In all seriousness however, I agree that Harrison plays on the edge, and that there are times that he crosses that edge, but I just can't see how that hit is worth so much. I'm just waiting for the moment they start fining linemen for hitting helmets (which happens every single play). They can focus on this stuff as much as they want, but one, concussions will always be a part of football, two, if the dummies would wear helmets correctly some wouldn't occur, and three they need to focus on the TREATMENT of concussions as well as the prevention.

Probably worth noting though that, by his own admission, he was penalized for a virtually identical hit last week.

He's been fined several times, then he gets another 15 yarder last week where they let him off without a fine, but he comes back the next week and does the exact same thing.

When refs arent allowed to freely decide the out comes of games then i'll say that this league has any merit. Until then rules like "I meant to blow the whistle but I forgot, so its no goal" go away then this league is just as bad as the rest.

Don't be silly, just 2/3rds of them.

If that is supposed to be the 'in the process of blowing the whistle' then I think its a good rule. It sucks if it hurts your team, but it does take time to bring a whistle up and blow it. Now if I ever heard a ref say "I meant to but I forgot" I would think that it was both very funny and very wrong.
