Great article on why the Citi Open in DC isn't a part of the US Open Series anymore.

It's basically because ESPN owns the rights to all US Open Series broadcasts, and they weren't planning on showing ANY of the early round coverage on ESPN networks.

We should be very happy we had Tennis Channel doing the Citi Open and currently the Rogers Cup stuff in Canada.

Next week, ESPN isn't showing any early round coverage in Cincy.

Washington D.C.'s Citi Open out of US Open series due to TV deal - Tennis - SI.com

And even now, look around at the top juniors. Nearly all of them have some obvious tennis ties. Kozlov's dad is a tennis coach. Tiafoe's dad worked as a maintenance man at a tennis center, where Tiafoe had free lessons. Fritz's parents were professional and college tennis players. Michael Mmoh's dad was a tour pro who played tennis in the Olympics. Tommy Paul has been coached by his parents, who are teaching pros. So that's at least five of the top six American juniors whose parents were employed in tennis.

Womens tennis brings in a lot of athletes whose parents have no tennis connection. That's largely because it is relatively well-funded when one considers the salaries other womens sports attract. That doesn't exist for American mens tennis.

And the further tennis salaries fall behind, the more worldwide talent will ditch it for other sports. I don't think it is crazy to assume the Federers and Nadals of the next generation will choose to play soccer competitively instead of tennis. Why choose the sport where 75 people make a good living when you can choose the sport where 75,000 people make a good living?

nice win for big john

we'll see soon enough if kyrgios has learned anything from this, or if he just wants to cash in on the bad boy thing. he can certainly make some good money off of that.

Great chance to make the SF as he gets Chardy

Not going to watch a single WTA match today.

All of the ATP matches are good.

We'll get a better idea of whether or not Rafa is ready to make a deep run at the Open with his match with Nishikori today.

Same with Murray against Tsonga. Murray should win that match pretty easily since Tsonga's forehand isn't what it used to be, and his backhand isn't even top 80. Murray has fallen back to relying too much on defense of late, though, and if he does that, he's in for a hard time, I think.

Haven't watched a women's match all tournament

Gulbis about to break Nole in the 2nd set. He's playing lights out.

Why doesn't Gulbis always play like this?

Because his daddy is a billionaire, and he just plays tennis for fun.

Gulbis folded like a cheap tent in that tiebreak after having 2 match points

on espn3, they're showing the extend changeover between sets while gulbis is using the bathroom.

nole had his shirt off for about 2 minutes flexing/posing because the crowd was whistling when he first took it off.

now he's doing stripper leg flexes on the ump stand. lol.

Gulbis is done. If we win more than 2 games in this set I will be shocked.

Looks like they moved Rafa and Kei to another court

Love seeing Rafa put in his place on the hard court.

Also, I can't believe I'm saying this, but the Halep/Errani match tomorrow might be fun to watch. They're both excellent movers and solid off the ground, so it'll look like a pong match.

Nadal played better at the end, but those first 13 games were damn ugly. If that's the way he's gonna play, I doubt Nadal will want to keep going. The door is closing on him quickly.

If anybody is interested, the Murray/Tsonga match is on ESPN 3 right now.

All you have to do is use your computer/phone/ipad on the ESPN3 website or the ESPN3 app, and then put in your username and password for your current cable/dish account.

I'm watching it on my phone right now.
