I'm going to add Joe Dineen ILB to the list of guys who can make the roster of 53. Certainly he will be developed on the PS if not on the roster.

Here's some reasons:

1) Fangio likes guys who can tackle. Joe Dineen led the NCAA for two straight years in tackles - averaging 12 a game. One third of those were tackles behind the LOS.

2) The recently fired Kansas HC - who coached Chris Harris too - says Dineen is in the Chris Harris category as a steal in the draft.

3) The Broncos appear to be going to interior Dlinemen who penetrate into the backfield. The tradition way to attack a penetrating defense is to run right at it. Fangio needs at least one ILB on the field who can clean up RBs and QBs who slip past the defensive rush and make the tackle. This makes Josey Jewell valuable and it makes a guy line Dineen as insurance for the position.

4) Dineen is not a speed merchant, but he did not get invited to the combine and had a tweaked hammy on his pro day when he ran a 4.65 40.

5) Dineen is football smart.

I saw his tape after we signed him, and thought he could make the 53 as well. he's got some competition, but I think he sticks.

Here is a nice article on Dinesen. The article starts with he is 20 years too late with his style of play, my first thought was sounds like a Fangio type of player. He has been coaching for more the 20 years. He went back in history to pull out a defense that stopped the high flying Rams. The author believes he compared well to Jewell which is a player many of us like. The article thought he would be a 3rd day pick which could indicate great value.

We have had luck with Kansas. For as bad as their program is we have had some good players from there. Remember Dineen was the guy who didn’t shake Baker Mayfield’s hand before the Oklahoma game which led to Baker’s obnoxious crotch grab.

He currently leads the country in solo tackles with 109, the next highest has just 87.

great stat .. you're not making solo tackles unless you're diagnosing and understanding what is going on

2019 NFL Rookie Salary

2018 NFL Draft Analysis – Average Guaranteed Dollars by Round
1st Round – $15,704,128
2nd Round – $3,553,595
3rd Round – $893,636
4th Round – $636,680
5th Round – $275,805
6th Round – $148,767
7th Round – $82,937

A lot of us felt cheated when the Broncos seemingly frittered away 6th and 7th round picks - like they had no value in the past draft.

But here are some things to consider on the opposite of that opinion:

1) They draft may have had 120 6th or 7th round grades going into the 6th round -that's a surplus of about 40-50 guys who could get drafted but will be UDFA. You can sign a bunch of UDFA's and outbid others - if you save $148k in salary by trading away a 6th rounder.

2) Last year the NFL went to 10 person practice squad slots - which means teams can semi-control more guys and train them up to 53 man roster types. If you can develop players - and the Broncos have one of the best reputations in the league for developing players - better UDFA will sign with you.

3) Anytime - one of these UDFAs make it as a starter - say Phillip Lindsay for example - you get a big time contributor for a minor salary cap price. You can also try to line specialty players up to challenge guys like the fullback role - or a guy whose game mirrors Josey Jewel's (Ashton and Dineen). Heck- you've got the top Oline coach - get some UDFA prospects for him to work with.

If my presumption that there was a surplus of guys with 6th or 7th round grades - it made sense to give up the sure pick of the litter for one roster spot (see if you get lucky) and concentrate on an effort that rounded up the top of the group that didn't get drafted -with extra money and a reputation for getting guys into the league.

I don't know if it is still true, but at one time I heard that undrafted free agents tend to get more money then the 6th and 7th round draft picks. With what Rypien got I think that is specially true. If the Broncos draft him in the 7th they pay him 82,937 instead they gave him $146,000 in guaranteed money which is about 6th Round level per the article below:
Brett Rypien’s contract guarantee reportedly is a record for Broncos GM John Elway

Well, Rypien's contract is an extreme outlier. Usually, the highest the Broncos have handed out was like $25k.

If Hogan can be an effective back up for Flacco and Rypien is safe on the Practice squad then I wouldn't mind having Flacco, Hogan/Lock as our QB's. I'd rather not carry three unless we have to but it's a good combo. Established vet starter, rising star, and experienced back up. We could go in several directions from there. I just don't want to lose out on Rypien by keeping Hogan. Maybe the new CBA will cut 2 preseason games, add 2 regular season games, and increase roster sizes.
