According to Larry Brooks of the New York Post, via Twitter, RFA winger Bobby Ryan has re-signed with the Anaheim ducks for a total of $27.5 million over five years.

I'd wait to hear from somebody more credible than Brooksie, but hey if true, that's big time dollars for Ryan.

Seems a tad steep for me. Can't blame him though. Just thik he would have accepted less.

But the upside is there. I like the kids skillset and mindframe.

He was very cool in meeting my nephew too. Made a lasting impression on the little guy.

Ya know, the more I think about players who make around 5 mil right now, maybe it's not bad...

Looks like the Ducks and Ryan's agent have said there is no deal in place.

Don't ask me for a link, I read it somewhere and I am too lazy to actually do the leg work of verifying sources.

EDIT: Dash beat me to it.

I'd be surprised if Ryan signed for more dollars than Getzlaf. I mean, you can't have Silver earning more than Gold.

Ya but Ryan has more hair. :D

Also, Ryan is every bit the player Corey Perry is if not more imhumbleo so that contract would definitely be in line. Plus it's hard to compare contracts that were signed in different years. Getzlaf is a huge bargain. Hopefully Ryan heads out to Toronto.....

the money was apparently never an issue (short term). $5m-ish seemed to be the magic number. Ryan wanted to have a 3 year deal so he could be UFA sooner and go for the big paycheck. Ducks wanted 5 or 6. If this deal turns out to be true (or close), looks like the Ducks threw a few extra buck per year to get the term.

I was going to make a smarmy comment about the source, but let this one slide.
always go with yer gut :D

I think the Kovalchuk deal might have changed things for Ryan & any other players of his ilk. There won't be anymore 10+ year ridiculous contracts. If he can get over 5 million per from the Ducks he should take it.

agreed... esp if its a 5 year contract or something mildly long. the kids still imporving and has proven his worth in the past 2 years he's be a player i'd be okay with eating 5 mil of my cap .... as long as he stays on the same track.

that said its funny that brookes was almost dead on in the kovy situation from july 16th on, but never right about anything before that and as soon as the kovy situation ends just got back to being

Having seen/heard most of the games in their careers, Corey Perry is much, much better. At times, Corey Perry is better than Ryan Getlzaf- if not more reliable.

I guess I'll have to respectfully agree to disagree here Quoi on both counts. I've seen their careers as well quite a bit as they've all tortured my Sharks. I also lived down in Santa Barbara for 5 years (more for Perry and Getzlaf's years than the Bobby Ryan years though) that had all of the Kings/Ducks telecasts. Perry is a definite step down from Getzlaf. Maybe not on any given night, but when you take into account the whole picture, in my humble opinion it's not even close between the two as far as comparables go.

As for the Perry vs. Ryan debate. Perry may be a little more polished than Ryan is now, but not at the times they signed their contracts (Perry in the offseason of 2008 and Ryan this offseason). In fact, they look very similar. Keep in mind also guys, Perry was on a MUCH stronger team in the 2007-2008 team. Granted you can't only rely on offensive statistics, but seeing both players quite a bit, neither is a defensive whiz in their own zone. I might have gone a little overboard in saying that Ryan may be "if not better" than Perry. However, he still does look every bit the player that Perry is if there career growth follows the norms of their current (almost linear) paths. So I think I was pretty spot on as far as the "every bit the player" comment.

Corey Perry:

2007 - 2008: 70gp - 29g - 25a - 54p - +12 - 17:57
2008 - 2009: 78gp - 32g - 40a - 72p - +10 - 18:36

Bobby Ryan:

2008 - 2009: 64gp - 31g - 26a - 57p - +13 - 15:26
2009 - 2010: 81gp - 35g - 29a - 64p - +9 - 18:29

EDIT: in my humble opinion.

I hate Corey Perry, but he did score a big goal last February in Vancouver...

Not a fan of Perry either.
The issue with Ryan so far has not been the money, it has been the length. (insert rude comment here)
Ryan said that he did not expect to make the same money as Perry and Getzlaf. However, I think he knows both those guys want big money on their next deals. That is why Ryan only wants a three year deal. He knows the "cap" is Getzlaf. If Getzlaf gets more than Ryan can ask for more. The Ducks don't want all three of them looking at new deals at the same time. They are afraid if that happens one of them, or more, may go.

Let's wait until the season starts before anybody starts setting any bait for a Perry remark from me, ok?
