I Was An NFL Player Until I Was Fired By Two Cowards And A Bigot

Chris Kluwe contends that he was fired by two cowards and a bigot because of his outspoken views in favor of marriage equality.

TBH I don't doubt anything he said in the article. At the same time, I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't stop Mike Priefer coaching.

Reactions?

If that was the case then why don't anyone else want him....Could it be that he is not very good at his craft after what 8 or 10 yrs in the league.....And when you work for a company that has an image to protect, you learn to speak at the right times and shut up at the right time....These guys are something, like Charles Barkley who thinks his dumb bald head old news basketball player self can bash owners of football teams, tell the government how to run the country and parents how to raise their kids, that is when he's not in the Casino feeding his gambling addiction.....No matter how many idiots you add together, they are still just idiots...

Vikings response:

The Minnesota Vikings were made aware of Chris Kluwe’s allegations for the first time today. We take them very seriously and will thoroughly review this matter.
As an organization, the Vikings consistently strive to create a supportive, respectful and accepting environment for all of our players, coaches and front office personnel. We do not tolerate discrimination at any level. The team has long respected our players’ and associates’ individual rights, and, as Chris specifically stated, Vikings ownership supports and promotes tolerance, including on the subject of marriage equality. Because he was identified with the Vikings, Chris was asked to be respectful while expressing his opinions. Team ownership and management also repeatedly emphasized to Chris that the Vikings would not impinge on his right to express his views.
Any notion that Chris was released from our football team due to his stance on marriage equality is entirely inaccurate and inconsistent with team policy. Chris was released strictly based on his football performance.
We will have further comment at the appropriate time.

The part that I like the best is where they say "we will thoroughly review the matter." Then they go on to say "Any notion that Chris was released from our football team due to his stance on marriage equality is entirely inaccurate..."

We just heard about this today and we are going to review this matter but we already know what happened.

I think Kluwe is a good punter, but there's a ton of competition in the market and you can get punters so cheap nowadays because of it. Kluwe could help out a few teams (Browns/Raiders off top of head) but not sure whether they'd want to pony up his salary he was getting (which was like $900K a year).

Suffice to say, in that competitive of a field, best to keep your mouth shut and know your place. You're not a franchise NFL QB who can get away with r*pe in a college bar, or a star ILB who can kill someone and easily get off.... you're an NFL Punter. LOL. And I'm not comparing murder/r*pe to outspoken minds... but just saying, that's the difference and value of the position(s). :)

At the time, I thought his release was pure football reasons. After reading his post, I'm skeptical now. I'd still lean football but I'd love to see one of his teammates that heard those alleged comments back his story. Right now you could argue he's just bitter and is trying to use his philanthropy choices as a reason for his ouster to gain support.

Because a punter isn't worth a distraction? It doesn't mean he can't play.

I also have no problem believing his story. Assuming it's accurate (and interested parties will get the story, regardless of whether the press does), I think it's likely Priefer's done and unlikely he gets another job. Kluwe likely doesn't, but I respect him a lot more for how he handled it than most of the rest. I also don't doubt that this kind of thing happens. I'm generally not a fan of outing locker room occurrences, but as he's directing it solely at the responsible party and I don't have an issue with it.

Havent read the article yet, but If I remember correctly Kluwe was kind of a loud mouth. Not just about gay rights and wasnt a world beater punter either. Maybe that had something to do with him no longer being employed with the Vikings.

He was true. He was always blabbing about something, and punters are pouring out of college at the moment. Tough field to get a job in considering a lot of teams find a punter and stick with him. And if you need a new punter you have so many options you don't really need to pay top $ or deal with any headcases.

I would think, based on the tone of his post, that he doesn't really want other players to be publicly involved in this. He made it clear that was a part of the reason for the timing of this; to not be a distraction. I believe he'd be satisfied with backing his portrayal to the owner if he is not aware of what went on.

I would laugh my butt off if the Vikes turned around and sued that little jerk for slander....
He wants to have his say without recourse but then calls the people that payed him for 8 yrs Cowards and Bigots....If they called him a girly boy, he would be crying wolf, just like he is now....This crap with these sensitive weirdos needs to stop....If they want to be weird, go ahead, just quit asking normal people to accept it, they obviously don't accept that....I f they can't take the heat, the closet is still there....just sayin'

OH AND KLUWE,

You were cut because you cost the team $1.5M a year in salary compared to the league average of $800K. That's why you got cut. Because the team has far bigger needs than an f'ing punter consuming that much cap space while your profession grows on trees.

Kluwe is an idiot and for him to assume that's why he was released when there is a blatant reason staring him smack in the face.... moron. Hope he gets sued for slander as someone else said.

The Sparkle Brony loudmouth below average punter is chirping again? I don't believe a word a says. If this happened, why didn't he speak up at the time? Or after he released? It's not like he is shy & afraid to speak his mind.

Hasn't his 15 minutes expired yet?

The thing I find funny is a lot of the people defending the Duck Dynasty guy are ripping this guy, and vice versa. Not saying this about anyone who has posted in this thread, just a general observation.

I'm glad you made that comparison (I don't have a TV nor do I give a crap about that TV show), because the network that tried to get rid of Phil Robertson openly admit that it was because of his comments. This punter is just crying like a little bitch & making up excuses for himself because he won't admit he wasn't worth the money he was making.

Did you even read it? Because he pretty clearly said punters are plentiful and he was making g more than most. I got the impression he would have been open to contact adjustment but it was never an option
