Stadiums were cavernous during the Mays Aaron era. Willie Stargell had 400 foot outs than any player in history. Forbes Field. And it wasn't the only stadium like that. Mays played over half his career in Candlestick. Played another 10 games a year in Yellowstone park also known as Dodger Stadium. Modern stadiums are deliberately built small to encourage more homeruns. Pop flies to left are homeruns now more stadiums than not.12 players greater than Trout (and this is not a complete list):
Stan Musial
Ty Cobb
Jimmie Foxx
Babe Ruth
Roger Hornsby
Lou Gehrig
Barry Bonds
Alex Rodriguez
Willie Mays
Hank Aaron
Ted Williams
Albert Pujols
How is he doing it in an era TREMENDOUSLY tougher on hitters? Mays and Aaron played in an era where the pitcher's mound looked like a skyscraper. The rest of them had to face pitchers who could legally throw spitballs. Throwing faster does not automatically make a pitcher better once you've risen to professional level of competition.
And the extra speed pitchers have can work against them if they can't locate their pitches. You still have to execute the pitch.
Mays and Aaron (and the other 10 guys on the list) were expected to play every inning of every game. Never had the luxury of days off to rest nagging injuries. No luxury of being rested against a pitcher had success against them.
