What you are saying makes sense, but I don't totally agree on the first part. If Un is smart he knows that outside influences are going to be harder and harder to control. And he has to know on some level that the outside world is never going to let him have full nuclear capability. So giving up that option to potentially allow your economy to flourish could be huge and has the potential to make his country successful. Gorbachev did this, went against the narrative, and reversed the course of his country. Since Un still controls the propaganda, he can spin it a different way, but that time window is limited in my opinion. And I think he is not insane like his dad, but probably doesn't have the vision to pull off what we are talking about.

I agree he isn't crazy but doesn't know any different than what his father did. Instead of changing due to outside influences he is trying to make it harder for his people to hear or see those items.

Also that is very true the outside world would never let him have full nuclear capability but as long as his people think he does he stays in power. That goes into the issue he just isn't smart enough because he doesn't know how to spin the propaganda in his favor without showing that military power. It all goes back to all their propaganda is based around beating the US in the Korean War.

*siiiigh* I remember the first time this happened for me. 1988.

*looks off in distance forlornly*

It won't be the first time for me so I know how to handle it.

In Canada you vote for the MP to be in your riding, not directly for the party leader. When none of the leaders are my cup of tea I just find out which candidate will best represent my area, then I vote for them no matter the party.

My favourite broken Trudeau promise: "We will absolutely be implementing proportional representation in time for the 2019 election."

12 months later, after Gerald Butts reviews a shit-ton of polling data and comes to the conclusion proportional representation will cost the Liberals a shit-ton of seats:
"We will not be implementing proportional representation in time for the 2019 election."

In 2 of the last 3 federal elections I have not voted for the MP in my riding of the party I want to win because it made more sense to vote for another party's candidate in that particular seat in order to harm my party of choice's biggest opponents chances of winning more seats. Or, in short, I engaged in "strategic voting" because it was the most logical method of voting.

Only two PM's have won a majority of the popular vote since WWII.

And we laugh at the electoral college lol

It's not even a very hard sell. "I conceded our nuclear arsenal to open up trade with other countries. We don't need those weapons to be a legitimate military influence in the world, and we will continue to be feared and respected. But those other countries thing we've taken a step back in power, and will now compensate us by bolstering our economy. My foresight and humility has allowed me to save our country's people and its economy, and we will thrive from now on."

Un is still the unflappable leader, in total control, but now he's also a savior. It's a huge win for him.

And honestly, why no one has bothered trying to sell him on that angle is probably a failure of these denuclearization talks. If you want to convince someone of something--especially someone like Un, who's crafted his own reality--you have to work in their headspace.

You know I didn't think the guy really existed. I thought it was another of Trumps identities.

Trump would never give himself the name of a dirty eye-talian. Too ethnic.

That is the issue they already think he is their savior so in his mind why break what isn't fixed.
Also going back to even his fathers time this is a great example:

Also a mighty military compensates for his other short comings.

Great point, I was thinking about it in the fact he is too stupid to come up a good Italian ethnic name and used the last name Calamari.

It's weird because Matthew Calamari and Tony Cannelloni are two characters from @Comeds second erotic novel "A Night Inside Little Italy."

Definitely worth a read and it even has a lasagna recipe on the back cover.
