What you are saying makes sense, but I don't totally agree on the first part. If Un is smart he knows that outside influences are going to be harder and harder to control. And he has to know on some level that the outside world is never going to let him have full nuclear capability. So giving up that option to potentially allow your economy to flourish could be huge and has the potential to make his country successful. Gorbachev did this, went against the narrative, and reversed the course of his country. Since Un still controls the propaganda, he can spin it a different way, but that time window is limited in my opinion. And I think he is not insane like his dad, but probably doesn't have the vision to pull off what we are talking about.
