This bitch is embarrassing and a moron...way to go NY....

  • Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was the only House Democrat to vote against a bill to reopen the government on Wednesday.
  • In an Instagram post that has since been deleted, Ocasio-Cortez said she opposed the spending bill because it allocated funds for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency.
  • While the New Yorker campaigned on eliminating ICE, she hasn't prioritized the proposal since her election to Congress.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was the only House Democrat to vote against a bill to fund the government and end the partial government shutdown on Wednesday.

The progressive New York Democrat said she broke from her party because she didn't want to allocate any funding for the the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE), which she campaigned on eliminating.

"Most of our votes are pretty straightforward, but today was a tough/nuanced call," she wrote in a since-deleted Instagram story. "We didn't vote with the party because one of the spending bills included ICE funding, and our community felt strongly about not funding that."

The bill, which was supported by 223 Democrats and six Republicans and opposed by 183 Republicans, would fund the federal government through February 28. The shutdown - the longest in history - is now on its 33rd day and has left 800,000 federal workers without pay.

Conservative media pounced on Ocasio-Cortez after she voted in support of a bill earlier this month to fund the government, which included funding for DHS and ICE. Right-wing critics called the lawmaker hypocritical for calling to "abolish ICE" while voting to fund it.

*Services not available to borrowers in New York due to interest rate limits under New York law.
Yeah lets take out high interest short-term loans that most won't ever get a chance to pay off.

Also I can just picture it now, going into your bank asking for a personal loan. First question: Do you have any income? Answer Nope since I am furloughed. Bank response: Declined.....

Not only that if they are an hourly contractor they won't get back pay and have the liquid assets to pay off this loan.

Sad how out of touch with reality these folks.

So she got called out for breaking a campaign promise on one vote and corrected the issue on the next. Sounds like she did her job to me.

EDIT: By way of follow up, she's far from "embarrassing" and "a moron." She's got a remarkably informed and nuanced view of her policy positions. Media who don't like her pounce on small semantic points to paint her as an airhead, but she's better informed and more clever than at least half her peers in the House.

At some point we should stop fetishsizing wealth in this country, not just wealth but obscene amounts of wealth. By and large we continually vote for people who have never had to worry about their next meal, or a doctor's fee. Until then we are going to get out of touch politicians who think health insurance premiums are the same cost as a cell phone.

I still get all my long distance calls for $1 by calling 10 10 220.

In other news Marie Antoinette has risen from the dead and is being strongly considered for a position in Trump's cabinet.

He doesn't know she's French but he thinks she talks funny so he's gonna keep her around in some capacity. Just for the laughs and maybe a quick pussy grab. Stay tuned!!!

No, she's a far left wing nut job (socialist) with no life experience or qualifications to be a representative...and pimps free everything. Doesn't have a moderate or centrist bone in her body.

There is nothing nutty about her. You're buying the right-wing characterization of her politics, not accurately characterizing her politics.

Her tax proposal has already been (successfully) used in the United States. She pimps free nothing--she advocates for social programs which would likely benefit the country as a whole, paid for by taxes we should probably already have in place. She knows where to get the money, and the impact of her policy would likely be positive for the huge majority of Americans, in particular those who are underrepresented and vulnerable.

She doesn't have a moderate or centrist bone in her body because she ran on a platform which isn't moderate or centrist and was elected for those positions. It's now her sworn duty to remain what she is and what she was elected to be. Progress doesn't happen if everyone's a moderate or a centrist.

She made a protest vote on a bill which already had plenty of votes to pass. It was harmless but still sent the message. And honestly, if she deems ICE to be an evil manifestation of policy, compromising on ICE isn't an option for her. She was elected, in part, to oppose ICE. She can't represent those who elected her and compromise on that point. She's doing her job.

So we should keep voting in millionaires, billionaires, or wannabees who preach the same thing most politicians have for the last 50 years? How's your healthcare costs compared to 20 years ago? Rent? Mortgage? In relation to your income?

AOC doesn't seem perfect but at least she's not the status quo. The status quo is not working.
