Hypothetically speaking, if Trent Richardson somehow fell to #30, would you take him? We need a RB to replace Gore soon.

He'd be probably BPA, but we have other pressing needs so you'd think about passing him up even though he's most likely BPA at that point.

I am hardly ever a fan of taking a RB in the first 2 rounds, let alone the first round. The only guys i would of selected in the first couple of rounds since 2008 would of been Chris Johnson, Ryan Williams, and C.J. Spiller. However, i would definitely consider taking Richardson depending on who else was available. He's going to be a productive player for whoever gets him, but I just can't foresee him getting past Atlanta as a worst case scenario. The problem is you can find productive RB's in rounds 3-5 fairly easily. We did it with Gore, the Cowboys did it with Murray, the Jets with Shonn Greene, ect. It's much harder to find a guy who can come in and be a #1 WR (particularly with this franchise).

I would actually rather have us trade back and take David Wilson if that were an option.

one guy i'd love to grab to groom as gore's replacement on day 2 is jonas gray. notre dame's best offensive player this past season.

But another TE is?

I'd much rather go with Wilson or Miller at 30 than Fleener or Allen if they were available.

Hunter looks like the future back for the 49ers at times he looked better then Frank Gore!! There is a good chance we don't draft a running back

hypothetically.............Trent Richardson would be the clear BPA based on what i've read. so yes, take him at 30th.

for most fans, their first reaction is.......RB isn't a need for 2012, but over Trent's CAREER we'll gain a lot of talent.

Would he be the BPA in this hypothetical? Who else is available? What if Morris Claiborne is also there?

And what happened to "BPA with an eye toward need?"

I'm interested to see what happens to Polk after a mediocre senior bowl and lackluster combine. He's a potential every down guy with good patience and vision. And if he falls, he may be motivated to really work to improve. Not really sure what round I'd take him in, but he'd be a consideration.

As for Richardson, that's a no-brainer. I don't like RBs in the first generally speaking, but that value is just too good.

i see hunter as a good change of pace back, but richardson would give us 6-10 years of gore, or at least something close to gore

and if good value doesn't arise at RB thats fine too, then don't draft a RB. fortunately, RB isn't a DIRE need.

Hunter looked good as a rookie no question, and he'll likely get even more reps in 2012.

If he fell to #30, and he is the BPA, yes draft him. That's too much talent to pass on. I see Hunter as a good chance of pace back, not running between the tackles.

Trent Richardson is too damn good to pass on. He would be the starter next season and he is both fast and strong. Would be nice to have a power back with speed and at any time the ability to take it to the house. Frank Gore had that for a while, but does not have it as much anymore. He reminds me of a Marcus Allen with his ability to get short yards mixed with Barry Sanders ability to hit home runs and get big yards.

Yes, he is a very solid RB. I don't think anyone is arguing that he isn't going to be a great pick up for the team that drafts him. The fact is that you can find good talent at RB in almost any round. Sure, the chances are better that Richardson will start right away, but look at Gore (3rd round), Forte (late 2nd), Foster (undrafted), Blount (undrafted), Demarco Murray (3rd), Shonn Greene (3rd), ect. It's fairly easy to find a starter in later rounds. It's much harder to find a guy who can come in and be a number one WR or CB (which happens to be our positions of need).

Also, RB's have much shorter careers. They are usually on the downside of their careers by the time they hit 30. Some last longer, but that is also something to consider when you are using a first round pick on a guy who may only be a starter for a limited number of years.

isn't he close to top 10 in most mocks? even if he's top 15, thats not just 'solid' value, thats a steal at 30th.

not arguing you can get starting RB's later on, nor arguing against the age of 30 for RB's. but this scenario seems like a no brainer?
