When he tests the free agent market he will almost certainly find an offer from some team that is willing to overpay for him. I think he will get 3 years for around $60 million.

Really? $20M for 3 years for a position player going on 38? Seems like a reach for almost any team... maybe the Dodgers or the Yankees I suppose but I'm not even sold there. Based on yearly average, that would make him the highest paid 3B in baseball... at 38.

or at least tied for first with D. Wright for total salary in 2017:

Look at what Boston paid for Pablo Sandoval. If a team was willing to pay him that then paying Beltre slightly more would be very possible I would think.

Sandoval is 29 and was 28 when he signed with the Sox I think... so that's like a 10 year age difference.

I think max Beltre will get is a 2 year contract. Probably around $16-17M and I still feel like that is being generous. He would have to put together a pretty convincing season to get more IMO.

Really, the only way I could see him getting more is if LA got interested which I guess is a possibility - retire where he started plus their 3B is a FA in 2017 as well.

I'm all for just letting this contract situation ride for now myself. There's just too many things that can happen which could really turn this signing into a long term quagmire.

I look for Beltre to have a productive season. But no one gets better, and most don't even maintain in their late 30s.

And I agree with you completely in that I can't imagine imagine anyone giving him $20 mil per for 3. Even the Dodgers aren't going to go out on that limb, IMO anyway.

Yeah, I agree. At the current asking price, you got to let it ride. Love the guy but, to my knowledge I don't think any 38 year old player has ever been offered such a contract and for good reason.

I wonder how long they can keep a 3 man bench?

Beltre age 38 asking for 60 million over 3 years? Did he ask for that on April 1st?

No one in their right or wrong mind is doing that deal. And the Dodgers will resign Turner after 2016.

Has nothing to do with the Rangers, but the Cubs lost Kyle Schwarber for the season.

If no one claims him, he'll be outrighted to the minors if I'm not mistaken.

From Jamey Newberg

The club now has 10 days to trade, release, or outright Ruggiano to the minor leagues. A trade is unlikely and it would be surprising if another were to claim his $1.65 million contract on waivers. Assuming he clears waivers and the club outrights his contract to AAA, Ruggiano would have to accept the outright or else he’d forfeit the balance of his deal — and if he accepts the outright, he won’t be paid on the basis of the $1.65 million amount he signed his big league deal for, but instead based on a lesser amount, as he has a “split contract” with Texas that gets paid at one rate in the big leagues and at a lower rate if he’s in the minors.
The minor league value of the split contract hasn’t been disclosed.

Ouch....tough times in the Ruggiano household. Hope it works out for him.

Andy Ibanez went 4 for 5 last night for Hickory and gets a HR in his first at bat tonight. The 2B from Cuba might not be long for Hickory.
