regarding the Washington post article. I think Jones is spot on in the Sherff assessment. It looks like he is going to be a better guard than tackle. But some of us already knew this going into the draft. So to sum up we drafted for need over BPA.
we took the BPA and that was scherf , get over it
Absolutely. Talk about a bunch of "Glass is half empty" folks. Instead of reading into this as they messed up by drafting the wrong guy or other "woulda, shoulda" stuff how about the fact that Moses and Scherff both could make major contributions to the O-line & the end result might be something that this team has not had in quite a while. Enjoy successes when you can (assuming that they happen this season & beyond) & stop worrying about what could have been.
While I agree 100% with this sentiment, we did draft for need with the first pick. Now he may have been the BPA for us, but he wasn't the BPA in the entire draft. My bet is if we didn't take him, he would have not gone until the teens. I think most realized that he probably wasn't an NFL caliber T, at least not yet. But big deal. As you state, if he can anchor the RG position for 10 years and give us a couple of PBs, its a pick well spent.
Maybe. But if they evaluated him as a G in the NFL like most did (and like it appears he is turning out to be), then they would not have taken him. Fortunately for us, we needed both a G and a T so it was very little risk for us.absolutely disagree because the Giants would have taken him and soon as he was drafted by us they panicked and took Ereck Flowers

I think it's more a combination of both. Scherff was really struggling with the speed rushers. He just doesn't have the foot speed. And with Moses emerging, there was no reason to force fit him into a position he wasn't ready for.thats not the case Moses has just massively improved since last year and you want the best 5 olinemen on the field
If he turns into a PB caliber guard and anchors the position for years, then it was a good pick.I think everyone of us is right regarding Scherff, just depends on how how you feel about a guard at 5. He never was a tackle as a lot of us said all spring. He was drafted to play RT, that's a big reason why he was taken so high, and he didn't make it. The Redskins totally lucked out that Moses improved as much as he has or they would still have a giant hole at RT even after spending the 5th pick. That alone has turned this from a bad pick (IMO) to an OK one.
But I totally believe the reports that the Giants were taking him a pick later. They too were going to try to fill a big need at RT. But unlike us they did not have a Morgan Moses to fall back on so it would have been a bad pick for them IMO had they been forced to move him to guard as we have done.
On the other side Scherff is a monster and will be a great guard, I loved the part of the article that references him stoning blitzing linebackers up the middle. That has been a huge problem for us. So it comes down to this: do you believe a guard is worth the 5th pick in the draft? You know my feelings but if you think a guard is worth that high of a pick then Scherff was a good pick.
