I'm officially on a Kyle Williams for WR2 campaign!

49ers practice 8/1/2012:

Receiver Michael Crabtree (right leg) did not participate. Crabtree appeared on a side field in shorts and a long-sleeve shirt to work [on pulling his head out of his ass] with head strength and conditioning coach Mark Uyeyama. He stretched and performed some simple exercises. No serious running was involved.

He came out to the practice field [in time to watch Kyle Williams demonstrate the finer art of playing WR and why he and not Crabtree should get the nod come 9/12/12. Oh, and] to watch the final session of team work.

CSN's Mindi Bach observed a couple notable Kyle Williams moments. In a 7-on-7 drill, Williams lined up wide right in front of cornerback Tramaine Brock, who was playing seven yards off. Williams grabbed a nice 35-yard reception.

A few plays later when a coach criticized A.J. Jenkins on his execution of a route, Williams grabbed the rookie and showed him what the coach meant and gave him a supportive pat on the helmet before running off to the next drill.

Williams has been outperforming Crabtree since oh I don't know, 1986 or something like that - enough is enough with Shit-for-brains-Tree - Williams is a gamer and a team player - put 'em in coach!

Note: Some of what is posted here represents the "unedited" version of Matt Maiocco's article just prior to going to press, thus the final article may appear different...

Edit: This is from one of the other links:

"It was third-and-10 when Kyle Williams dove across the middle and snared a Colin Kaepernick pass. Then it was Williams slipping past cornerback Carlos Rogers for another third-down converstion. Finally, on third-and-2, Williams went deep and hauled in another Kaepernick pass."

Goldson (and seemingly Gore) picking up right where they left off last season:

"Bach also noted a notable practice tidbit: "Alex Smith sent a short quick pass over the middle to running back Frank Gore which tipped off Gore's fingers into the hands of safety Dashon Goldson for an interception.

Gore's reaction was just as quick. He dropped Goldson instantly, hard and loud. Gore is known as a football savant. Apparently, he's watched and learned from the 'Hawk' himself."

I really like Kyle Williams. All of the calls to cut him last off-season were extremely overzealous, and I think he's gonna suprise some people this year.

"Yep" on all points!

Kyle Williams is not starting material in the NFL. Maybe for a craptastic team like the Rams, but that's about it.

Can be a decent return man, but after the NFC Championship game I wonder who's gonna trust him to do that...

Wow, not your best effort NS. You are simply wrong on your evaluation and if something happens to Ginn you WILL see K-Dub returning both punts & KO's for us, so I guess there is your answer to who will trust him to do that.

I'll word it differently. Who's going to trust him to be the first string return man?

On what point do you think I'm wrong? That he isn't starting WR material in the NFL?

Fangio says the defense can be as good or better than last year, “but it might not show on paper.” - Inside the 49ers

I think we can all agree it might not show on paper that this is a great defense. Not with the Packers, Patriots, Lions, Saints and Giants on the schedule. All of those offenses are so good that any one of them can put 400+ yards of total offense up on the 49ers if the 49ers make a couple of big mistakes like in the Saints game... plus its just hard to guard Megatron, Gronk and Graham as individuals then the Packers have arguably the best WR/TE group in the NFL.

Call me crazy or stupid, but I actually like him better than Victor Cruz. I'm happy to have Ginn and James back there as our special team aces.

Yeah thats one of the things I'm looking forward to the most this preseason, the battle to be the return specialist. I figure Ginn, Williams, James and Cox will all get a go at... maybe even Jenkins?

Allow me to then revise my post - If we had lost Ginn to FA, Williams would have been our #1 returner coming into camp and I believe would have been our starting RS to begin the season. He is a very capable RS.

Williams made mental errors, not tactical errors there is a big difference. No ST's coach would discount his ability as a returner because of mental errors. Errors I would bet more than a check he will likely never make again.

As for what points you are wrong about his ability to be a starting WR in the league - I honestly believe most to all of them. I can't think of anything that Williams doesn't do that isn't starting quality for a WR his size.

As long as he isn't diving for any more punts like he did in the NFCC game (though he did catch it), I'll be fine, tactically-speaking. I don't know what he did wrong on the second fumbled punt (which I knew the Giants were punting to him on purpose - could have kicked closer to the one, pin us back), but I'm sure he's learned from it. Mental errors, he'll fix with more experience.

That would be a mental error - not a tactical error - please don't get involved with this - Thanks
