At first, I called it a douche move, but I heard a police captain interview on the radio and he said that although it was outside of general protocol there was reason to do it.
1. James didn't ask for the escort.
2. He was being recognized which was starting to cause a bigger potential problem/backup then simply shutting down 2 intersections for a couple minutes so he could drive the 8 blocks to the stadium and let everyone else also get there in a quicker fashion.
