Paul Byron should be wearing the C on that team.

/he's still in the league, right?

Oh for sure. Weber is still decent too.
Weber's contract and all its awfulness masks the fact he's still a top pair guy for most teams.

It's also worth remembering that if he retires early it's Nashville that gets hit with all those recap penalties, not MTL or any future team he winds up on.

Things that don’t make any sense: Ottawa is willing to move Karlsson but mandates that any trade have Ryan attached. Wouldn’t that just torpedo the return on Karlsson?

It also restricts the market since both have modified no-trade clauses, so Ottawa can really only trade with the teams on both lists. And then those teams have to have the cap room too.

From Bobby Mac

On the flip side, Karlsson’s potential availability now represents a rare opportunity, especially for any NHL organization that can think outside the box and get creative in its approach. It’s not often a player of this magnitude becomes available and rest assured there are multiple organizations asking themselves how or if they can make this work.

In poker terms, that is a tell. Bob is telling us the Leafs will get Karlsson. He practically says Lou Lamoriello in the quote.

I jest (I think) but which organization has proven they can deal with ridiculous contracts (meaning Ryan) better than TOR? I wouldnt put it past Lou to talk down the price for Karlsson, take on Ryan, and then a mysterious injury befall the guy. Or trade him to Arizona. Or something else he has in his voodoo bag.

If taking on Ryan means you can pick up Karlsson for something like Liljegren, Leivo, Pickard and a First, I am OK with it.

I really have no idea what the Coyotes plan is - Do they have a plan?
They hired Rich Tochett as their coach, so no they don't have a plan.

Leafs wouldn't have the cap space for both but regardless if I'm taking on Ryan I'm keeping Liljegren.

If the Leafs take Ryan the chances they can sign the big 3 AND Karlsson to extensions is almost none unless they have a pre-approved plan to end Ryan's career. If Matthews and Karlsson sign for $10m each and Nylander and Marner get $7m each, that's $41 million cap-wise spent on 5 guys. Throw Andersen, Rielly, Zaitsev and Kadri in and that's $60 mil on 8 guys and leaves $25 mil for 14 guys. I just can't see those numbers working.

Lou got the number of the quack that diagnosed Hossa's rash, he has an out plan for Bobby Ryan.

That takes willingness on both sides. Can't imagine Ryan is ready to stop playing hockey right now and I don't think he has the type of injury that would make him fail his pre-season medicals.

Don't underestimate Lou-doo

TMM (too much math). It may be doable, might have to cut Zaitsev loose to fit. I agree, the left half of my brain says no way.

And there you go. No Leaf in sight.

Going to be some good defensemen moving Monday from the sounds of things. I think Mcdonagh goes to Toronto and Karlsson goes to Tampa.
