I think we shuld remove "Hard Rock" and stick to Metal.

I saw the post about Rush and thought, hell yeah, for hard rock... but they can't really be called metal...

Then, I started to think about what qualifies as Metal? I'm thinking Van Halen is the cutoff. Anything harder than that qualifies. Anything softer is just Hard Rock. But, I'm not sure if they qualify.... ??

Anyway... Didn't Metalica have about five albums in the 80's? I'd say "Ride The Lightning", "And Justice For All", and "Master of Puppets" should be included.... Same with Maiden: "Killers", "Number of the Beast", and "Piece of Mind"... Ozzy had "Madman" and "Bilzzard" in the 80's.... "Mindcrime" was great.... Megadeath, Slayer & Anthrax should all be mentioned....

One of my favorites was Suicidal Tendencies, but their best wasn't until the 90's...

And, perhaps not a top twenty, but GWAR deserves an honorable mention.

Back in Black and Appetite are great choices.

This obviously doesn't fit into the metal genre, but it's great hard rock album. Dinoasaur Jr YLAOM

Underrated album:

Savatage - Gutter Ballet

They're kind of a poor man's Queensryche, with a big voice upfront, excellent guitars, and even more dedication to the concept albums. The centerpiece song from Gutter Ballet:

That's just one of the better guitar solos you'll hear anywhere.

Another song from that Savatage album, its really an incredible song but if you wanted to know what happens if you mix hair metal + Broadway:

Just talking about this at work.

Top three Metal/Hard Rock albums of the 80's

My choices

Ronnie James Dio - Holy Diver

Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime

Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance

Alot of people said Back in Black, while it was agreat album i'm a Bon Scott fan and think they were much better with him, imagine how good that album would have been had he not died.

Others that come to mind in no particular order are... GNR Appetite, Ozzy Blizzard, Crue Shout at the Devil, Metallica Master of Puppets, Maiden Piece of Mind, Black Sabbath Mob Rules, Mercyful Fate Don't break the oath. There are obviously many more and some of these had multiple albums that could be considered but I just wanted to include a few.

What you got?

That album would not have existed if Bon Scott had not died. It would have been completely different. The album was all about Scotts death and how the band was back.

There are a lot of good rock/metal albums that came out in the 80s but one of them stands head and shoulders above the rest...

It is really hard for me to rate one of MoP, RTL or JFA above any of the others. RTL was possibly the best collection of songs, while JFA was the best "album" (each song flowing into the next). MoP may have been the great compromise between the two concepts.

That's not entirely true, they had already had the name of the album in mind while Bon was alive and it's been reported they had some song titles and some lyrics in mind prior to him dying. "Have a drink on me" is a little insensative if he had nothing to do with it no?

Respect your opinion but it's all about taste I guess as I tend to lean towards Mindcrime as the album of the decade. But again, just my opinion...

Speaking of thos albums, which was the better instrumental...

Ktulu
Anesthesia
Orion
To Live is to Die

I realize there have been instrumentals since, but I kinda lost track of the band after Black...
