Yount = CF

Trammell = SS

No brainer

(Besides, Stephens should have defeated Yount in the first round)

??? Yount doesn't count at SS but Carew counts at 2b...at least Yount has more ABs at the position.

Is this directed at me?

I mentioned that I don't like Carew at 2B, but his opponent was not enough to knock him off. Carew was a stud during his short time at 2B.

Young loses because he is facing a legit contender at SS (and did as well in the first round).

I will always be shocked that players like robin yount made the HOF... AND NO I don't think Trammell belongs either... Yount won 2 MVPs, but they could be the worst MVP seasons I have ever seen...

If I have to pick one out of these two it would be trammell, only because of defense... But I would say the winner here is a safe loss in the next round

I don't think you're giving Yount enough credit on at least one of his MVPs....his 1982 was a huge year.

His 1989 MVP has nothing to do with this thread, as well. He did not play SS for a single pitch that year.

'89 was a bit of a weird one, but '82? A shortstop leading the league in OPS playing 156 games for the winningest team in the league isn't some ol' ordinary shit.

Didn't say he didn't deserve the MVP award... He was the best player... Just compare that season to other MVP seasons and it was a weak one... He did not break 30 HRs(29), he only had a .379 OBP, only 54 Walks, only 114 RBIs(again comparing it to other MVP seasons).

it did look like he had his best defensive season that year too, so that helped... But on a best season ever, I wouldn't put that season to be a top 20 season of all time... not even top 50 or 60... He just had the best season in a very weak pool...

They've been giving out MVP awards in one form or another for over 100 years though. "Not top 20" (or even "not top 60" for that matter) should not be synonymous with "one of the worst".

Hell, just looking at the recent history and limiting it to the AL it's easy to find worse seasons that won. Pedroia, Morneau, Tejada and Suzuki stick out without even looking at any detail or going out on a limb.

I don't disagree, but again, should a weak class of players boost a players value that much?? nobody is calling Pedroia or Tejada a HOFer, but a 2 time MVP like Yount is a HOFer... Yount was a very good player, but he really wasn't anything too special IMO...

Tejada's career numbers were put up over 3,000 fewer PAs than Yount. Pedroia is almost 7,000 behind. These are not comparable players when looking at overall career value (which presumably is what the HoF is looking at).

Then again, this was in the 1980s where hitting 40+ HR or driving in 140 runs weren't common. Looking at RBIs for instance: only 3x in the 1980s was there a guy who drive in 130+ RBI....so taken into that context, 114 for Yount is quite impressive.

2008 AL MVP did have a relatively weak field. There's a lot of good cases to be made for Sizemore, Youk, Pedroia, A-Rod, Mauer and Markakis (hard to believe he was so good in 07-08, he's been such an average-ish player since).

Pedroia's not close to being a HOFer right now, but he's easily been one of the best players in the league since 07 (averaging 6 bWAR per 162 games over that span). 45.1 bWAR. He's been a fantastic defender (by eye test and metrics) and has a career 115 OPS+. Problem is, he's had several nagging injuries (wrist, legs) and he's 32 years old. And 2nd basemen aren't known for aging well.

Yount hit 29 home runs... while leading the AL in doubles (46) and batting 12 triples. His 87 extra base hits were the most in the AL. He led the AL in SLG%.

Going by wRC+, Yount's 1982 (164 wRC+) was 11th among all-time shortstop seasons. Six of those seasons ahead of him were by Honus Wagner.
