This is a fun one. It was a real life choice too, and back then Whitey Herzog chose Porter.

I remember the trade. At the time it wasn't that big of a deal, but looking back now I would say the Brewers won.

The issue that forced the trade according to Whitey was that Simmons had originally agreed to play first base (with Hernandez moving to right field) when Porter was signed to play catcher, but changed his mind after the fact. Whitey figured he wouldn't play first base for him and he couldn't play catcher for him, so he had to go.

The Brewers won the Simmons trade, but I'd say that the Cardinals won the Porter/Simmons decision since they got a World Series win out of it. Plus it was a difficult trade to negotiate in the first place given that it was a deal that everyone knew the Cards had to make, they weren't going to start the season with two starting catchers and two closers on the roster.
