This one is tough... Parrish was the much better defender... Hartnett was also a good defender, but nowhere near parrish...

parrish was a better power hitter, but Hartnett was a better overall hitter by a pretty large margin...

I generally go defense at the catcher position, especially if the better defensive player was not terrible with the bat... But parrish was not good enough with the bat to justify being better than Hartnett... his .313 OBP is just not good enough compared to Hartnett's respectable .370 OBP...

Relative to their leagues, I'm not so sure that Parrish was the better power hitter. Hartnett 5x finished in the top 5 in his league in homers, and 7x in the top 10 in slugging.

I always like to compare primes. Harnett from 1924-1937 and Parrish for 1979-1990. The league slugging percentage was higher during Hartnett's prime, but that was due largely to the fact that the league BA was .290 compared to just .263 for Parrish. The league ISO during Hartnett's prime was .121 compared to .132 for Parrish. And Hartnett's ISO was higher than Parrish so I would agree, Hartnett had more power.

The only knock on Hartnett is really that he only played 130+ games three times in his career.
