I think that's the biggest difference for me between guys like Frank Thomas/Edgar Martinez and someone like David Ortiz. Those two had some of their best seasons at other positions, whereas Ortiz was strictly a DH (1827 games at DH, only 273 at 1B; never played more than 70 games in a season at 1B). And that's before you factor in them having better career stats.
They both have a good 20+ WAR on Ortiz, even though Ortiz has 400+ more PA than Edgar.
