Right it’s not against the rules but you still can hit the ball much better than everyone else. I consider that cheating
At the pro level, if it isn’t against the rules, it isn’t cheating.

And when he used, most of the game was using, and that included pitchers (reportedly, MORE pitchers used than hitters).

Just because people praise Bonds does not make them “Bay Area loving fellas”. Only a couple of the participants in these polls are “Giants fans”, and these tend to support Mays over Bonds anyway.

Lighten up, I was just razzing you a little.

and yes... i am getting my panties in a twist about this... i think it is absurdly rediculous that anyone would vote Mays over bonds, and then vote bonds at all...

you are either anti bonds or he is 1 or 2....
I understand getting panties bunched. Talk to me about the DH or Rose getting in the Hall…

I am voting Mays because of the eras they played in. Mays played in an era where offense wasn’t as ridiculous as it was in Bonds’ time. And Mays was considered pretty much the hands down greatest defensive CFer until Jones came around to start up a debate. I am a believer that defense is VERY underrated in baseball. So you have one of the best overall hitters ever, an elite base runner, an all-time defender, and a civil rights icon (he came up right after Jackie) all in the same person. And he lost 2 seasons IN HIS PRIME to the war.

and everyone who actually saw him play said he was playing a different game than everyone else.

I think its entirely possible to see Bonds as a great player that had a great career that was boosted a little bit at the end and just slapping him on the wrist a little bit

except the reason he is even in question is because of what he did when he was on steroids... he was a great player before, clear HOFer, but he was not top 10 until after his steroid prime

He had 3 MVPs and 5 additional top 10 MVP finishes before it is generally accepted that he started using (1999 season). Removing his “assisted” seasons does not necessarily remove him from top 10 (or better) discussion.

he did not lose 2 years in his prime... he only missed one full season... and it was when he was 22... his age 23 season he was back... sure, that age 23 season was one of his greatest...

but overall i agree that he has a LEGEND unlike anyone else... for the reasons you gave... but that is even more evidence that you are probably jaded by his legend...

“Legend” status is not handed out like Willy Wonka Golden Tickets, though. They are earned through accomplishment.

i still think it is Bullshit that this is even a question... if Bonds does not win the 2nd best player, then he shouldnt be top 10... if he is voted anywhere 3-10, then this list has lost all legitimacy
So, if Bonds is number 2, then this list is legitimate? If Bonds is number 11, this list is legitimate? But if he is anywhere between 3 and 10, then it is illegitimate?

8 GG’s is more than just solid. Mays fell off quicker than Bonds offensively, some can say it was bc of roids. What Barry did in his late 30’s and even in his 40’s is beyond ridiculous. He was still drawing walks anf getting on base like crazy. Nobody can contend with Bonds if we are talking about peak except Ruth.

The question is Mays defense a bigger gap than Bonds had offensively over Mays or any player: longevity, peak, etc? That is tough bc we never saw anything like what Bonds did. I got Bonds bf of dominance and peak
Ever looked at Hank Aaron’s numbers in his late 30s/early 40s?

As I said earlier, Bonds played in an incredible offensive era. Just blindly looking at his numbers and declaring them better than Mays’ isn’t fair, imho.

As msg stated, I am still voting Mays here, but I have absolutely no prob with people going Bonds instead. Ask me this same question in 20 years, and I may very well laugh at the fact that I didn’t vote Bonds here.
One other thing to keep in mind is that Mays missed some prime years due to the Korean War. Bonds or Ruth didn’t lose any time like that.

Right it’s not against the rules but you still can hit the ball much better than everyone else. I consider that cheating
If it is allowable at the time and both pitchers and hitters were using it commonly, did it really give him that much of an edge? I saw a report a number of years ago that calculated the average distance a hitter would get on home runs and it wasn’t much. It basically gave an edge mostly to warning track guys to get cheap home runs. It really didn’t give more than 5 or 10 feet in distance.

But many were doing it too, and it wasn't against the rules. It wasn't cheating per se it was keeping up with the league. Pitchers did it too.

A year and a half but yes. Had a very good shot at passing Ruth's HR total if he had played then

We are only doing top 10.

You're losing sight of the big picture which is at the level of all time greats there's no way to definitively rank these people. They are all top tier and there are too many variables. Some put the steroid variable higher than others, but it doesn't mean they say 'steroids = not on the list", to them it's "steroids = reducing their ranking", just like you might reduce a ranking for a player not facing black players, or for playing well past being good enough, or not being a good base runner, or whatever.

The fun is the arguing. You're having fun, right?

He used amphetamines.

Bonds never cheated. <---

Then why did his personal trainer, Greg Anderson, go to jail for refusing to testify against him?

Still think that is weird as hell. Wonder why he did that?

Mays. No roids. No cheating
Mays. Amphetamines. Juiced his entire career. Stop being a hypocrite.

A typical line 3-5 for Barry Bonds:
3. league average punk ass bitch
4. Bonds
5. Jeff Kent
or
2. Van Slyke
3. Bonds
4. Bonilla

A typical 3-5 lineup for Mays
3. Orlando Cepada (Hall Of Famer)
4. Willie Mays (Hall Of Famer)
5. Willie McCovey (Hall Of Famer)

which player do you think had the most protection in the lineup?

Because he would not have only been asked questions about Bonds and some of the non-Bonds questions would most certainly have incriminated him. But, the sports writers hated Bonds so they chose to print the story in a way to make Bonds look as guilty as possible.
