Maybe it's the edibles kicking in but I'm really all in on Joey D here, dude is a baseball superhero...there's Ruth, Mays, Dimaggio, Jackie R, a couple others (one of whom I will mention...). Take an almost never seen career where EVERY year is near great to great (stark contrast to Pujols here, great for a decade, very disappointing for a decade...how can that guy go in ahead of a literal Paul Simon lyric?!), going to the WS basically almost every year and winning a ton...the streak, the smooth defense: no better CF to watch play it is said and I believe it (my dad says DiMaggio never (not literally) had to dive for a ball, it always came to him). Hell, Marilyn.

I'm simply not going to be all numbers here, that's why I keep nominating Ohtani (knowing that he rightly won't get in anywhere in the top 50 at least)...and that's why DiMaggio needs to land here. He's too low to be honest, he should be higher and Henderson a little lower (another example of a baseball superhero who slots in, correctly, "above his numbers")

--Where have ya gone, Joe DiMaggio?

--Looks like I went about 19th

yes... there are some players who have LEGEND status... no matter how good they were in real life... in no way should Joe D be a top 20 player if you ignore that status... might not even be top 30, or 40(dont know yet if i am exaggerating or not)...

but that legend status is so hard to measure... I am very ok giving these LEGEND/HEROS, some sort of "bonus". But how much??

and modern day baseball players dont get that hero status, but that is because of the fans, not the players... should ballplayers get punished for how fans only see athletes as entertainers and athletes now, and not as role models, and heros?

i honestly dont know... sports in general has changed so much...

but Joe D, was a hero on the field and off the field, and had military time to be a REAL HERO...

but can that really boost a player over a FAR SUPERIOR player??

i mean, pujols vs Joe D statistically is not even close... no matter what statistic you use...

even post season, Joe D might win the WS competition 9-2... But Joe D never had a great post season... Pujols on the other hand is a very good post season player...

On this one we definitely agree. I don't think Joe D is too far off but I'd slot him about 10 spots lower than this. Yes, he is a legend but aren't we supposed to be separating the player from the legend and looking at how he actually played? The idea is ranking the best players of all time, not the most popular or loved players of all time. That would definitely be a different list.

not sure if there is any criteria for us to vote by...

he is a lot like Willie mays in that he has so much "other" stuff... unmeasurables...

then there is always the question... was he a winner, or did he win because of the team?? 9 wins in 13 seasons is basically unheard of... would like to see if anyone has a better ratio than that with a minimum of 7 seasons...

I couldn’t disagree more that the legend is the only reason DiMaggio is top 20. He has excellent numbers year after year, no bad years at all, a top 3 center fielder all time, mVPs and rings. Jackie Robinson is a better example of that, no one is voting him on these lists even with his legend.

DiMaggio is probably too low on this list. You only get his legend status by being the best of your era, or tied for that (in his case with Williams)

sure... he had no bad seasons... but thats because he only played 13 seasons... you are actually giving him a bonus for playing a short career, which is pretty weird... He also won 3 MVPs., and i would argue only one was the CORRECT choice, with one of the MVPs being a non deserving one...

funny you bring up Robinson... i would argue robinson at his best was better than Joe D....

13 great seasons is not a “short career”. Especially with the war time service in his prime we give others credit for. You are penalizing him for not staying around being shitty at the end like so many do. You and I strongly disagree here

Robinson was what now? LOL.

Yes 13 seasons is a short career. And it was far from 13 great seasons. At best you can say it was 10.

Honestly I have no problem with people voting “Wrongly”. I just hope there logic is good. Unfortunately here yours is not.

the only reason to vote for DiMaggio is because of his legend and hero status. Which of course includes his 9 ws rings. His legend and hero status is easily top 10 ever.

But from actual baseball play, only judging by what he did on the field. He is not top 30. And it’s not even close.
