I don’t care much either way but I’m sort of puzzled why this final vote has 5 names on it including a couple that have zero chance this round. I thought the runoff was meant to give 2 finalists most times?

i think i am slowly moving to the point where i think Joe morgan was better than Hornsby...

and i am definitely past the point where i think ARod is better than Wagner... not even sure, if i think this one is close...

but schmidt is the clear best 3B, and Clemens is the clear best available pitcher...

Henderson is a unicorn, and almost impossible to measure accurately...

id rank this 5

1. clemens
2a. Schmidt
2b. Henderson
3. Hornsby
4. Wagner

I try to take the top 150% of vote getters (because each voter is allowed to select 3). I will fudge the numbers up or down sometimes to “make it work”, but it is working pretty well right now, I think.

Hornsby 58%
Wagner 32%
Clemens, Henderson, Schmidt 19% each

It's a fun result of giving people three votes!

That’s cool just seems like it means a second runoff will happen a lot which adds delays to this but there’s no hurry so whatevs

Hornsby is the best bat still on the board. And I don’t really think that is really close (ARod-anomaly excepted). MAYBE Morgan played better D, but I don’t think we have much of an idea about how good/bad Hornsby was.

I agree that Clemens is the best pitcher, but I think there are 4 or 5 guys in a neck and neck race for that distinction.

I agree. Making the first round a nomination phase rather than a true vote allows for more specific comparisons and to anticipate upcoming matchups.

3 votes makes sense in the nomination phase it just seems like overkill to have 5 names in a runoff when 2-3 have no shot
But if the 3 modern guys had everyone coalesce their support, they would have a 60% result, overtaking Hornsby. Early results are looking like this will be a runaway, but we have seen early results swing as slower districts report results.

I think I have this:

1. Hornsby
2. Henderson
3. Wagner
4. Schmidt
5. Clemens

Although I'm not sure I have Clemens as pitcher 2 or Wagner as SS1 (Arod)

Can you defend your Morgan > Hornsby opinion?

I understand the ARod > Wagner opinion. I just don’t share it, and I have made my case numerous times.

For the record, I think I rank this batch…

Hornsby
Wagner
Clemens
Schmidt
Henderson

But I would be very happy with any of these guys taking this spot. Schmidt and Henderson were two of my favorite players growing up, Hornsby and Wagner, imho, are the 2 best players still on the board, and Clemens is a demonized great, who may just be the greatest pitcher to ever play.

There are just too many guys, in my opinion, between this spot and Schmidt, Rodriguez and especially Henderson. I think Mantle's spot will be tame compared to any of these guys being ranked in any of the next 5 (or, in Henderson's case, 15) spots.

To the comparisons…

I think we have talked Hornsby and Wagner to death. Hornsby the peak player while Wagner is the accumulator player. Wagner played the more premium position, but Hornsby also played “up the middle”.

Unfortunately, though, Clemens as a pitcher and Henderson as a unicorn make it very difficult to make stat-based arguments against Schmidt (who is also somewhat of a unicorn seeing as he is the hands down greatest 3B ever).

Separating these 3 may be completely subjective with very little objective arguments even possible.

I didn’t say I was there yet. I am just gradually moving them closer. I will do a real analysis later. Because 1vs 1 analysis are much easier to do.

Wagner imo is not close to Hornsby.
