3 votes makes sense in the nomination phase it just seems like overkill to have 5 names in a runoff when 2-3 have no shot
Right now, it looks like only the “no chancers” have a chance of bringing this to a 3rd runoff against Hornsby. The Hornsby and Wagner voters, I think, are likely the same people, while everyone else is split amongst the modern players.

I didn’t say I was there yet. I am just gradually moving them closer. I will do a real analysis later. Because 1vs 1 analysis are much easier to do.
I agree. I am just curious to see how Hornsby/Morgan can be argued in favor of Morgan.

There are just too many guys, in my opinion, between this spot and Schmidt, Rodriguez and especially Henderson. I think Mantle's spot will be tame compared to any of these guys being ranked in any of the next 5 (or, in Henderson's case, 15) spots.
I know you are a big Young and Speaker defender. While I don’t agree with those placements, I get them. Outside of them, who do you see ahead of these guys, though?

I can see Bench/Berra or Robinson, and that’s about it for position players. Maybe Jimmy Foxx. Maybe Mel Ott. But NONE of these guys are head and shoulders better.

I kind of wish we did best at positions first and then did this... i feel like lots of players get ignored simply because you default to what is believed...

What i mean, Hornsby vs Morgan, whether close or not is at least an interesting debate... but when we do best player, hornsby automatically wins the best 2b, and we ignore Morgan, so we can compare Hornsby to others...

I honestly, think that is the only reason Musial won the 10th spot... i think if we did position best first, we would have had a more accurate list...

of course CF would have been fun as well...

There was a positional one a few years back

I've briefly mentioned Kid Nichols, Lefty Grove and Grover Alexander. I think they all are in the Top 25. Mike Trout, I've come to be convinced, is Top 20. I have mentioned that Roger Clemens is going to start to get one of my three votes after either Young or Hornsby get voted in. Mel Ott, as you mentioned, I'd put above Henderson. Here are the names I'd put, not necessarily in this order, of the remaining Top 25:
Cy Young
Tris Speaker
Roger Clemens
Honus Wagner
Mike Trout
Grover Alexander
Christy Matthewson
Lefty Grove
Mike Schmidt
Eddie Collins
Alex Rodriguez
Mel Ott
Kid Nichols
Frank Robinson

I will try to cycle some of these guys in through the rotational noms, see if any of them can get any traction.

Grover Alexander, Lefty Grove, Eddie Collins and Kid Nichols would all be new additions to the rotation. Not sure any would garner SERIOUS consideration from me over the guys we have been discussing, but I am interested to hear arguments.

trout is going to age better in the rankings... i feel like we ding him for things that in 15 years, we might just forget, or not care as much about...

we ding him because now he can no longer stays healthy... and we just want to watch him play...

we also ding him for him choosing to stay on a non competitive team... but in the future, that wont be much of a ding...

some of us might even give him bonus points for spending his entire career with the same team(assuming he does this)...

but as of now, i do think it is fair to have him behind at least May,Cobb, Mantle

I am ranking him as if he retired today. I don't know what he is capable of doing. I know the expectations are not high but I am hoping he puts in at least one more injury free season because when he was healthy regularly, he was fund to watch. Of course, even if he gets in an injury-free year or two before he does retire, I don't expect them to be anything close to his peak years but he'd still be pretty darn good.

I agree. Assuming he stays with the Angels his whole career, wouldnt we actually rate that as a positive for just about everyone else? Just because there is a narrative that he doesn’t care about winning, the actual action is an action that is praised almost everywhere else. And he is still young, so a career resurgence is certainly possible. We have seen it probably more often than we haven’t. And he already legit belongs in a top 20, top 30 discussion based on what he has already put in the bank.

Henderson as a unicorn make it very difficult to make stat-based arguments against Schmidt (who is also somewhat of a unicorn seeing as he is the hands down greatest 3B ever).
Henderson has a higher career WAR than Schmidt. I wouldn't call that 'very difficult' tbh

It still blows me away that he hasn’t added to his WAR7 in the last 5 seasons.

Defense is a major part of the game.

Schmidt played the #4 most premium position, is considered the best ever player at said position, and played in a dead ball era.

Henderson, despite Olympic sprinter level speed, played the 2nd “easiest” position and was really never known for his defensive ability.

Schmidt gets (++) points for defense while Henderson probably gets (-) points.

sure... but WAR doesnt represent base stealing well... so you can make the claim that being the best baserunner is not only not represented in comparison, but has to be an artificial bonus...

100%

which is why I call Rickey a unicorn. And his skill was not only the SB, but distracting the pitcher so the batter gets an added benefit.

No stats capture what Rickey brought to the field.

I guess.

Big factor here is that Schmidt had a 14 year prime with 2 good years, too. Henderson has a few more 'good' years tacked on hence the higher WAR.

Is Henderson your first pick all time as a lead off man?

There is no one else even in the discussion.

Raines, Brock, Lofton etc hardly even belong in the discussion for #2 if Rickey is #1. Rickey should be #1, #2, #3, #4 AND #5. He is THAT dominant.
