A running back or receiver can put his hand to the face mask of a defender and there is no call, but if a defensive player does the same thing, there is a flag. I've never understood that.

I agree, some ball carriers pretty much hit the defender in the hewad and it's allowed.

So the message you want to send to the team is that RGIII doesn't suck, the rest of the team does. And because he's the most important player we have, we are going to bench him to protect him, while the rest of the team can go fuck themselves, and thousands of fans lose their shit?

You're setting it up one way. There are a number of possible outcomes and the guys in the locker room already know exactly who the most important guy in that room is. Agree to disagree.
